This is a great start. Just make sure your rod is more of a moderate action. You dont want a fast action rod for catfishing.

rod and reel? when i was your age I'd put the cane pole down next to the water, go bird hunting and then swim out and fetch my pole. Catfish on it everytime!

40-50# braid main line and then a 20-30# mono leader.
