do you want to:
(a) kill it and eat it?
(b) just kill it?
(c) catch it and remove it?

(a) buy some chicken leg quarters and let them get good and nasty. Get a big hook (i mean big) and some black twine. Cut a stick about 8-10' tall and a piece of bloodweed or something like that the same length. tie the twine to the stick that it sticking straight up. place the bloodweed at a 45* angle over the pong with the chicken hanging a foot over the water. wait till hes on the line, pull the line till he's up and pop him with a .22

(b)just pop him with a .22 behing the head

(c) call LDWF

slice it from the poop hole to the tail and start cutting the skin back off of the tail then you remove the meat from the bone.

REMOVE ALL FAT FROM THE MEAT

dont worry if the gator is still moving, and the meat it twitching... its natural

ETA: I'm not going look b/c I'm lazy but I'm sure you can find directions on YouTube/Google

Better call LDWF before you do anything, or you could be looking at a Lacey Act violation

The Lacey Act is geared towards trafficking in “illegal” wildlife, fish, and plants.

Is it applicable here? Serious question.

quote:

The original Act was therefore directed at the preservation of game and wild birds, making it a federal crime to poach game in one state with the purpose of selling the bounty in another.

quote:

It was the first federal law protecting wildlife, although today it is primarily used to prevent the importation or spread of potentially dangerous non-native species. The Lacey Act also makes it unlawful to import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire, or purchase in interstate or foreign commerce any plant in violation of the laws of the United States, a State, an Indian tribe, or any foreign law that protects plants.[

Not sure of the specifics, but a guy I know got busted (different circumstances but similar) and they took him to the cleaners, happened in Plaquemine about 3 years ago, just got finished with court and he had to pay a huge fine and lost hunting privileges for several years. From what I understand he was a guides helper, and they had a customer who wanted a big gator and they took him somewhere they were not suppose to.

Yeah there's no doubt it's illegal and I get that's what you were conveying. I'd never heard of the Lacey Act so did a search to learn and only reason I asked.

I thought we were talking about a private pond here where it seems you have the right to choot it.

Negative, just like a deer, duck or turkey you have to follow any game laws that apply

the funnest and easiest way is to use a strong fishing rig/pole with a top water bait.

Call the Baton Rouge 24 hr hotline (18004422511). Tell them you have a gator problem, they will give you a complaint number and the contact info for the local nuisance hunter. He will show up and take care of the problem.
