I just added an expensive patio on to my house. It is all stained cypress. Well, when deciding what I wanted, I didn't think about the threat of carpenter bees onto exposed wood. They've bored about 4 holes in my 15' x 35' patio.

i was wondering of there was a preventive action that I could take to avoid the carpenter bee holes, besides painting the cypress. Is there an insecticide?

Pretty snazzy

Those stupid bees started fighting each other at 0:15. My mom has been having this problem on her cedar fence at home. I am gonna try it out

Judge. /thread.

Seriously though, those things are destructive. They get in my porch every year. I had a little fun similar to what Wickowick posted...but my Benjamin Nitro NP .22 this afternoon. Killed 4 or 5.

If you catch one going into a hole, kill it with a stick and leave it there, the rest will stop coming (dont know why, but ut works). Also spray a strong concentration of permethrin on the exposed wood in the area. Worked for me.

Wait, carpenter bee=bumble bee?

I'm really asking. In the video that looks like a bumble bee. Never heard of them called carpenter bees.

No carpenter bees have black asses, females have stingers but won't sting unless you really frick with them.

A tennis racquet can be great fun. My daughter used to have this little pistol that would fire off plastic pellets. I once shot and killed one out of mid air with that pistol. My greatest achievement ever.

We had problems at our camp. Made 3 of the carpenter bee traps. They look like bird houses but has two coke bottles inside each other for the actual trap. Haven't had a problem. Will get pictures when I get home

Please do. I have flocks of those things, and am not at my camp enough to use the badminton racquet solution (clearly the most fun)

Finally a use for the birdhouses the boys made in school that even a wren would find cozy.

I just spray Malathion on the exposed wood in late spring/early summer. It deters them for the entire season.
