Be in the surf early Throw spooks early in the shallow water then switch to whatever you like to throw I would bring some vudu shrimp to put under a cork, a few suspending mirrolures, and some matrix shad with 1/8 and 1/4 oz jigheads. Former coworker used to only fish a silver spoon in the surf and reel it fast on top of the water and do very well.

Always look for bait moving, trout busting, or birds diving. May have to walk down the beach a ways

Also, drive up the highway and fish off the side of the road. There is good fishing along hwy 1

You may also be able to catch bull reds in the pass right now.

If all else fails, get some dead shrimp and tightline on the bottom, you will catch something

You mentioned crabs, I never had luck with crabs in the surf until around July

I'm sorry but...

I don't know if anyone here thought it was a great idea, but that sounds worse than expected.

It was an experience. Fortunately for me, my family isn't too soft, so it never got to the point of a mental breakdown. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right.

No doubt about that. I'm a pretty fortunate fella. Also, thanks to TD, once we got to the French Quarter, I already knew where I got my shoes.

Made it to Grand Isle around 6:45 to set up camp. Wasn't too easy in gale force winds. Sunday we surf fished & the winds were pretty bad. It was tough fishing. By about 5:00pm, everyone was sun burnt to hell. The wind picked up pretty heavily that evening. Everyone packed up & left early except for us & one other camper in anticipation of the storm. We left the bottom of our spare tent open with all of our gear & it flooded. The wind pulled the steaks out of the ground on our main tent and lifted the rain fly. Not too comfortable trying to sleep on wet sand covered mattresses. Also, I kept mistaking the mosquitos for pterodactyls. Monday morning, we decided to pack up & head to N O. All of our clothes & shoes were soaked. It took probably 8 trips from the beach to the truck. A wagon is an absolute necessity. We had a great time once we got to the city. I can honestly say that I will never in my life time stay in Grand Isle again unless there are 4 walls with a roof surrounding me and AC.

I haven't laughed that hard reading a post on here in a while. Been there and done that brother.

I camped out once at Fourchon Beach. From that experience I recommend that you bring a 3 foot wooden stake, a sledgehammer, and a coil of rope. Shortly before sunset, hammer the wooden stake into the ground, and cut a 3 foot length of rope and tie it securely to the stake. Tie the other end of the rope around your ankle.

Doing this will prevent the mosquitoes from picking you up and carrying you into the marsh where they will eat you alive.

Tried to warn you about those skeetahs, baw. Just imagine how bad they would be if there was was no wind.

It was a hell of an experience. I'm back in WM now hanging under the patio. That sun with no shelter is brutal. The place really is a diamond in the rough if you live nearby. It's ideal for 1 day camping & fishing. An hour or so away & I'd be there often with very little gear to tote.

On a separate note, the WW2 Museum in New Orleans is sobering to put it lightly. I'd like to go back & spend an entire day there.

Lol. On the mosquito advice, that shite cracked me up when you posted it. I must've told 5 people the advice that you gave me. They laughed their asses off. Great advice btw.

I can deal with the heat, wind etc. but hauling of that shite back and forth to the car is miserable.

I literally have not heard about a GI camp trip without a collapsing or blown away tent. Knew a guy whose tent literally blew to pieces across the beach

I can imagine. The wind will do work on a tent. You definitely can't rely on the standard stakes that come with the tent. I'd recommend wooden stakes & rope as a reinforcement. Not too tough for the wind to pull tooth picks out of the ground.

The only thing we didn't bring was the couch & dish washer. When we arrived, there was a guy that saw us carrying everything & let us use his wagon. On the way out, it was all on us.

Someone could do alright renting wagons out around that place. I would've dropped $20-$30 for a wagon for a day.

Thanks for your update--you guys survived with a story to tell for many years! I spend a lot of time camping at GISP during June and July. But have a large yard/farm cart with inflatable tires to bring all my shite to campsite in one trip. Long metal tent stakes that are hammered into sand to hold tent. Separate screen tent for shade to hang out during the day and mosquito-free cooking/eating in evening. Learned that many years ago camping at Elmers Island. And nothing worse than being in a tent on the beach during a summer thunderstorm.

You're absolutely right. I don't understand why wagons aren't rented out.
