We had best luck with a couple cheap Coleman tents. Each lasted about 6 years camping once or more a month. Cheap and they were the easy to setup. Never got wet in them. We did spray with sealer once a year though.

Why is their fist camp trip with mom's? Typical Boy Scouts not making any sense at all?
Personally I wouldn't worry about weatherproofing something with kids. You don't want to be in rain with the wife or kids, at all.
Putting a tent under a pop up canopy is a great way to protect from the elements of you are car tenting.
What you want to splurge on is easy set up and take down. One with fewer poles and potentially one that has the poles included that just pops up. The cheaper tents have a bunch of poles and are more difficult mentally and physically to put together. Some of the bigger ones require two adults almost.

What type is sealer did you spray? Did you spray the whole tent or just the seams? Thanks.

It was an aerosol silicon spray. I've seen at Cabelas and academy. Not sure it was really needed but guess it didn't hurt.
Sprayed whole rain fly.

This is a discount program for Scouts from Alps Mountaineering. GREAT DEALS on very good quality equipment, they run deals at Christmas time and in the spring as well that make their great prices even better. I have bought two tents, bed rolls & backpacks over the years. All quality stuff.
