Have a question regarding this. Wanting to buy a boat in Texas from a TX dealer. How are taxes/registration handled? Do I take it to the DMV in LA and pay registration, taxes then?

Any of you have any opinions on the Yamaha jet boats?

Thanks in advance

The dealer will calculate your taxes by the parish you live in and you will pay them the taxes. They will then send a check to the dmv for the tax amount for the trailer, and a check to the department of revenue for the amount of the state taxes and parish taxes on the boat and motor.

You'll need to get a tax certification form (R-1331 I believe) filled out and signed by the dept of revenue by providing them notorized bills of sale, at which time the dept of revenue will refund you your parish taxes.

Once you have that signed form you can go to your parish tax office with proof of state and dmv taxes paid with bills of sale showing values, and pay your parish taxes with the money refunded to you by the dept of revenue.

The parish tax office will complete the signed R-1331 with parish tax info, and you will send that form in to the wildlife and fisheries with your registration application, and a check for the registration amount, which the dealer should be able to tell you.

You'll either need to submit certificates of origin to the appropriate agencies or to the wildlife and fisheries, don't quite remember.

Just make sure the dealer gives you proper bills of sale with values for boat, motor, and trailer itemized so the proper agencies can verify the different values for different tax payments. It will be a headache if they only give you the package price on the bill of sale.

Also make sure they give you enough notorized copies of your bills of sale to provide to the dmv, dept of revenue, and parish tax office.

Hope it helps. Went through the process last year and it was a learning experience.

I'm buying a boat from a place in Pensacola and asked them to charge me taxes. They said they don't handle that for Louisiana residents and I would have to go to my state and parish offices and pay them myself.

Wish I would have know that ahead of time. My fault though. However, one would think they would try if one was spending 50k at their dealership.

If you buy it from a private seller out of state you don't need to pay taxes..

Buying the boat is the easy part.

Once the boat is purchased make sure you have a valid bill of sale for boat/motor/and trailer if possible that has been notarized.

Then you need that tax form and will need to go to the state tax office and pay and then go to your local parish office and pay. (sucks) Once that is done you can then send off to get the boat/motor/trailer registered by the LDWF.

what sucked for me is I bought the boat from a state that did not tile trailers. That was a pain in the arse. Had to get a bill of sale from the dealer with they bought the boat, then had to get it inspected by state police. And make sure every single word on the bill of sales match.

I'm looking to buy a boat from a boat broker in Texas. The bill of sale has the original owner signed. Does anyone know if this counts as buying from a dealer or individual? BTW they told me I would have to pay any sales taxes due when I return. They do not handle.

I've done it twice and I'm in the middle of the process now.

Print the R-1331 form off the internet. Take it to your parish sales tax office with certificate of origin/bill of sale/invoice. Pay parish taxes. They'll sign the 1331.

Then, take the 1331 to a state tax office. There's one in Baton Rouge and one in New Orleans. Pay state taxes (4%). They'll sign the 1331.

Then, either mail the 1331 or bring it to LDWF in Baton Rouge with the appropriate application fee, and they'll give you your numbers.

After you do it once, it's not that complicated. The hardest part is dealing with the state tax folks.

The trailer is registered through the DMV.
