Buying a 3/4 ton Pick up
Posted by mcpotiger on 6/23/17 at 11:30 am00
Currently own a F150. Need a 3/4 ton for pulling trailer / tractor and 5th wheel the wife and I are getting. After my Ford experience I'm not a fan but I'm not counting out the F250.
Want a diesel engine. Insight from owners appreciated. Thanks

The new Super Duty is nicer than anything else on the road. It also cost more than anything else on the road. They are all stupid reliable, if buying new. I'd find one with the features and price than you want and be confident you made a good decision.
If buying used, lots to stay away from.

They're all very good right now. I'm biased toward the cummins, but whatever one you like most will be fine.

I was at a dealer yesterday that had a 3/4 ton 2017 Denali brand new for $49000. It was black and sharp as hell.

Yes it had the 6.0 engine. Still a good deal.
I had a 2008 2500hd chevy and likes the engine but it didn't compare inside the the 2012 F-250 I have now. The 6.7L gets around 10-11 mph towing my 32' 10k lb 5th wheel and around 15-16 mpg around town. If I did it over again I would get. F350. Also get the factory camper prep package.

I get a new Duramax every 3 or so years, or 150,000 miles, and have had great service the past 20 years.
Before, I got a company truck......the old 7.3 Ford diesel.
Never had any issues with either brand, but the GM vehicle rides a lot better than the Ford vehicles.

Right after Christmas I bought a brand new 2016 GMC 2500 SLT 6.0L from Everett GMC in Little Rock out the door for 44k. Check out Everett and Laura GMC if you buy new and check them often as I was told by my sales guy that their prices change weekly.
On December 26th when I bought my truck, they had sold 375 vehicles in December. Their goal was 450 and he thought they would get it. Pure volume dealership.
The only thing my truck doesn't have is A/C seats and a diesel engine. It's a fine truck! However, I'm still able to pull my 9,000lbs 5th wheel with no problem.

My BIL and dad also bought 2016 gmc 2500 duramax Denali from Everette in Arkansas around Christmas. Super easy to deal with and $56,500 for a loaded out duramax Denali. Everette run a good place. My BIL is a ford guy had a f250 it had several issues (6.0) bought a 2014 lifted ecoboost, over paid, and hated it. Now he has the duramax and it's been his favorite truck he's owned.
Everyone will have their own opinion and experience I'm biased to GM, then probably Cummins, but all the new tricks are nice.

Howard Bentley in Albertville had 2017 GMC 2500 6.0 crew cab 4 wheel drive for $41000. Didn't look close but it could have been an SLE it was good looking truck though.

Just got a 17 F250 diesel 2 weeks ago. Can't speak to the towing because I haven't pulled anything yet.
Drove from Midland to Houston this morning doing anywhere from 77-81 with cruise control on and got 14.7 mpg. Was pretty impressed
The truck is great, rides nice, has no problem accelerating when you need it.
I'd recommend one

I have a 16 Chevrolet High Country Duramax with about 8,500 miles. It rides great and it pulls a gooseneck or my 5th wheel RV like a dream.

Appreciate all the input. I'm going to look at both Ford and chevy tomorrow.
I bought a 17 F250 with the 6.7 about 2 months ago. It rides much better than the 14 2500 Chevy I had. I am impressed with the power for sure. If you hit it you better have plenty room in front of you...it's going in a hurry. I've been averaging 16.5-17 driving to work. Very impressed so far.

I have a 2017 F-250 and love it. Ride is greatly improved from older models, interior is very nice and the motor is strong. My two coworkers both have diesels also. One has a 16 3500 Dodge and it's a super nice truck inside and out. The other has a 16 2500 GMC. It's also super nice but for me I like the Ford and Dodge better. I'd go Ford and Dodge 1a and 1b with GMC/Chevy being a very, very close 2.
