Butcher Block countertops

A buddy of mine just had some butcher block countertops installed and has some left over pieces that he's offered me. I told him I'd take it; but don't really have any idea what all I could do with it other than making cutting board(s), and it's definitely not enough to do my counters. It looks like he's bringing me a piece that's about 3' x 4', another that's probably 6' or 7' x 3' with a notch cut out of it, and then some smaller pieces. Any ideas of what I could do with this stuff?

Kinda wondering why you said you'd take it.

I don't get butcher block counters, the idea that you can cut food on a surface that you can't bring to the sink to clean properly makes me very nervous.

6'x3' would make a good work bench or outdoor kitchen countertop. 4' piece could be good to put ontop of a metal work bench for working with delicate items you don't want on the harder surface. or use it to make a kitchen cart. I'm sure you could find projects to use smaller pieces with if you want.

Do people actually prep food directly on them? I assumed you would use cutting boards as usual, it was just for looks.
I think they are nice.

Originally he said he'd give me a piece to make a cutting board out of, came home from the golf course last week and he'd brought over all of the leftovers. I like the look of the wood and have a scrap wood area in my garage so I just stacked it there for the time being.

Maybe you can make a bunch of big cutting boards, but they will probably be thick and pretty heaby.

I'd make a really awesome work bench in the garage with the big piece.

We had them in an older house that I grew up in. We'd chop veggies on them, but never meat. It was a large island, like 3x8, and the sinks were on one side and the oven and stove on the other. So it was easier to cut on the island and transfer to the stove. Spray it with a little vinegar and water and wipe it down afterwards.

I'd probably make a really nice cutting board and then matching things to go with it for the kitchen or camp, stuff like this:

a piece that's about 3' x 4',
that would make a good looking pub table if you had a spot for it

I cut up everything on mine. Maple has natural antibacterial properties plus you oil them so the liquids don't soak in.

I kind of see your point, but butcher blocks worked just fine before we had plastic cutting boards. If they are cared for and cleaned properly, it should never be a problem.

I have one for my outdoor work bench. Best decision I made in my garage.
You can also cut it up into some sweet cutting boards. Keep one for yourself and give out some of the others for gifts.

Make a game room shuffleboard table. Those things sell for a lot of money.
