I'm considering building a sandbox for my children. The only sand I see for sale at the Home Depot/Lowes is crazy expensive. Does anyone have any experience with using just plain river sand and having it delivered to their home? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

We went to the mulch yard and got 2 truck loads of sand. It is not totally clean, but it works. It had some small pea gravel and even some leaves and twigs. He also suggested we try the cement yard down the street. Their sand is supposed to be very clean.

ETA: We got a cheap kennel cover to keep cats and whatever out of the sand.

Just a heads up. If you dont want sand all in your house get something that is large grained. I got sand for free for my kids but it was mortar sand and that shite sticks like glue. I thought "oh this will work great it is clean and free", not so much.

Don't. I did an they never played in it. Just attracts cats and holds water. If you do, buy the expensive sand for sand boxes. It is filtered. The construction grade sand could have glass, metal, etc depending on the source.

The kennel cover doubles as a sun screen.

honestly, unless you are talking about one hell of a sandbox, I would probably just go and buy a few bags of sand from the home depot...I mean, you can probably buy a half dozen bags of sand and be good to go...

Don't do it. It's a mess and they get over it quickly. Put up a tire swing instead.

Just go redneck and get them some topsoil/dirtpile...works great and you can use it when they get bored with it.

Gonna be a giant cat liter box if you don't cover it.

If your kids are small enough to enjoy playing in a sand box, just get a plastic one with a cover and buy the expensive sand. It will be on Craigslist after one season anyway.

I've thought about it before but we still had cats. Now that they're both gone I might build one. But my daughter wants a treehouse first. I was thinking of some combo treehouse/playset. Add a slide and a couple of swings. Maybe a zip line.
