Me and my buddies Don, Scott and Keith went fishing and flounder gigging in West Galveston Bay yesterday evening after work. The fishing was hit or miss and we ended up doing ok all-in-all by the time the sun went down. After that is when the real fun started. We started gigging and the conditions were great. We had only been to 2 spots right next to each other and were sticking flounder left and right. We had 14 on the stringer and it wouldn't have been long before we limited out. Best night of gigging in a long time. That's when it all went wrong. We were rounding the last corner at this particular spot and our friend Scott vaguely saw a flounder to his left(water was a little murky because he was the farthest away from the shore so it was about knee deep) and immediately stuck it. We use single spike gigs, so he bent down to get his hand underneath the flounder and around the gig like we always do. Can't risk it getting off before we get it on the stringer. As soon as he went down he said it's barely on the gig, so he asked Keith to give him his gig to double stick it before it got off. So Scott stuck it again and handed that gig back to Keith for him to keep pressure on it until the had it secured, but Scott was having trouble getting his hand underneath it enough to get ahold of the spike. So, Don knelt down to help him out and after a few seconds of feeling around Don jumped up and yelled stingray. Scott jumped up almost simultaneously and immediately we could tell he was hurt. No one actually saw what it was after being stuck because of the silt that had been kicked up. After we were like oh sh!!, we have to get to the boat right away. Thats when Keith finally snapped out of it from Scott coming up hurt and lifted the second gig and sure enough there was a flounder on it. What the hell? It couldn't have been a stingray then because we had a flounder on there. So then we were thinking he may have jerked up and got a gig in his arm. The wound was nasty nasty and had gone all the way through his arm. Longer story short, Don took him to the ER while Keith and I cleaned the boat and got everything out of it and they confirmed it was a stingray that got him. So, turns out there was a stingray and flounder either on top of each other or overlapping and we just so happened to unknowingly gig both of them. Poor guy reached under the wrong one to say the least. This all happened at about 11:00 last night. Sorry if this reads bad. I'm typing as I recall things. See the pics (see in the 3rd pic where it went all the way through his forearm and the smallest fish is a white trout). Be careful out there guys. Never know when things are going to go bad in a hurry.

Must have been a pretty good sized ray to make a hole like that in his arm. I took one in the hand and let me tell you that was some serious pain. It was a little ray about the size of a dinner plate and the barb went in between my middle and ring finger on my right hand. I couldn't make a fist for two weeks. Hope your buddy is ok that is going to hurt like hell for a while.

Yikes! That looks pretty gnarly.

Also, does his tattoo read "spices" regardless of which way you look at it?

Stepped on a ray in Fourchon while cast netting huge white shrimp at the rocks. Never seeked medical attention and was the most excruciating pain i've even endured. Lasted a good week with sickness and fever.

Tried everything but the one thing i should have done had i known. You soak the wound in the hottest water you can stand. Sucks most of the poison out.

I got stuck in the foot a couple of years ago and that was some of the worse pain I've ever felt.

It took about a year before my foot stopped bothering me and the one that got me was nowhere near that size.
