So any of the AFM engines are subject to failure due to the AFM system? Would you buy one?

they all are prone. A friend of mine is a mechanic at Brian Harris Chevy. Brand new 2017 truck is in his bay right now getting the cam and lifters removed right now.

I've had 2 GMC Sierras Z-71's since '02 and haven't had a lick of trouble with either.
Every brand has lemons.

GM has been trying this since they made a Cadillac that would do 2 4 or 8.
it was troublesome.

its a good idea in theory. save fuel. I nearly got the Cadillac but a friend beat me to it and later warned me off.

my 2011, that GM told me to trade in, had AFM. The sob only went into 4 cylinders on a decline, or when letting off the gas. At dead stop, when you would think that it would be in 4, it was in 8 cylinders. At first, they gave me option A: they pull the motor and rebuild, replacing lifters for 1800, B:drop new engine in for 1300, they told me that was 25% cost of new engine. I picked B. They then called me back a few hours later with C, trade it in, buy a new vehicle and get an extra 3000 in rebates on top of what was available. I had to take everything out of my truck, as if I would never see it again, and they took to auction. Someone wanted that truck bad and got a problem

Ended up being a stuck lifter and they changed out the oil pump as well.
