thank you in advance for your insight.
what is it that you enjoy so much about using a bow compared to a gun?
do you think it's more "fair" for the animal?
I have a buddy that's trying to get me into it, but i can't justify shelling out the cash for a bow when i can kill 'em and grill 'em with my gun.

Because killing one at 20 yards is a helluva lot different than killing one at 120.

I haven't shot a deer with a gun in years. I'm not against it and likely will in the future, but I just LOVE bow hunting, deer, hogs, squirrels, I've taken two coyotes by bow.
It's much more of an experience because you're typically closer to game, longer and earlier season, and I just love shooting my bow.
You should practice a ton. I've resorted to making my own targets because I'll literally go thru a Block or most 3d targets in a couple weeks. I just use boxes with 1" foam insulation from Lowe's, landscape fabric, and spray paint. I use plastic bottles with spray foam for squirrel targets. I go thru fletchings doing the latter lol, but Quick fletch is your friend

does meat taste better?

There's nothing better than the flight of an arrow and watching it disappear behind a deers shoulder. It's up close and personal. Anybody can shoot a deer with a rifle at 100 yards.

I bowhunt because it is exponentially more challenging than hunting with a rifle.

Nothing. Bow hunting is hard as frick. In Georgia the season starts in September when its hot as hell. I'll say the deer are moving then but I'd much rather have my rifle.

Way too easy to kill one with a rifle. Using the bow is a rush unlike the broomstick.....

you can legally bow hunt in Louisiana from Sept 17 - Feb 15... 5 months
rifle season lasts from Oct 31 - Jan 9 ... basically 3 months
IMO, bow hunting will make you a better hunter. Nothing like being up close and personal observing deer communicate with each other

Not sure why Got Blaze got a down vote but he is dead on in my opinion. Bow hunting will definitely make you a better hunter. I started bow hunting late in life, spent most of fall in a duck blind until rifle season opened. But as NYS started losing sportsman and deer population was growing they extended the bow seasons so I started bow hunting. I was immediately hooked and able to see deer before regular season pressure started and pattern them better. I know where the bigger bucks are and it has paid off bow hunting and rifle seasons I won't knock anyone for hunting their own way, bow, crossbow, rifle any and all are fine with me but I prefer my stick and string season now.

If that's your main goal of the hunt, bow hunting isn't for you. It greatly reduces your success rate.
It is truly for the sporting aspect of it. There is no other feeling in hunting than letting that arrow go at a deer 40 feet away.
You have to have more skill than rifle hunting...and I rifle hunt most of the time.

Harder than shooting one with a gun, thus more challenging and more rewarding as a result. Plus it's awesome getting up close and personal with deer essentially below up versus 250 yards away through a scope. Takes more skill and preparation.

I hunt with any weapon that is best for the situation.
Mostly rifle hunt.
But, plenty of bow kills in the back of neighborhoods at the edge of the woods (with land owners permission of course).
Now. The whole investment is worth 1 shot.....the first time you put an arrow into a deer.
That up close 'thump/whack' is primal.
Do it

And to add...most bowhinters are going to recommend you buy a $800+ now and another $200 worth of arrows and accessories.
Truth is, bow technology has improved so much over the last 20 years, and $400 combo from bass pro is infinitely better than the very best bow sold just 10 years ago. I've got a fred bear combo that shoots very well and kills deer about as dead as can be. Long story short, you don't have to spend a fortune. Its all about practice.

I use both bow and rifle. I am in love with bow hunting. You can learn more about deer in one season bow hunting than you can in a few years of strictly gun hunting from a box
When you're in a tree and the deer has no idea you're in it's world, you can hear it crunching acorns. You can see the warm air exhaled out into the cold air outside. Getting in position and being able to draw and get the shot off at close close distance is so rewarding.

I've never had more juice flowing then when trying to find a way to draw back on a buck 15 steps from me. I was able to take him, and haven't had an opportunity like it since, but there was nothing like it. Hell I get excited taking does with my bow. It can be incredibly frustrating, yet extremely rewarding. It's not for those who lack patience.

I agree with this. I got into bow hunting this year and shot 1 deer, it was awesome and something I will never forget. Plus, it extends my season!

Best times I have hunted is on the ground with a bow. Before all the commotion of gun season, deer are not as tense it seems. fully camo'ed, walking extremely slow in a pre-chosen path that you have researched.... doesn't get any better. get there at least 45 min before any daylight (very quietly)... and dont make ANY horizontal movements.... But now that I have gotten older I dont have the stamina Its well worth it if you enjoy the woods.
