My buddy is a recent boat owner. We are both fairly new to fishing in the marsh and went out of Delacroix this morning. We had a guy wave at us when going by on plane in a canal probably 50 yards away from him while he was anchored. After that we started slowing down when passing other boats.

My question is what is an acceptable distance from somebody else fishing to not slow down? And any other tips would be appreciated.

I'll slow down whenever IF the water isn't really low. Some people are going to wave no matter what though.

If I'm going by someone in a canal or other smaller waterway I'll come off of a plane well before where they are fishing.. But if it's in open water then I'll keep rolling by.

While it might piss people off, staying on plane is perfectly fine in some situations. I only slow down if I'm going close to someone

Alot of times, especially in the marsh, its a tough call and your call can be second-guessed.

Sometimes, due to depth, you cant get back up if you slow down, and sometimes you can disturb them less by staying on plane.

You will learn and develop your habits, and will learn tht you will piss some people off, no matter your decision.

We try to wave people by when they come by us. Then again, how can you tell if they're catching if you fly by...

The worst are people that come off of plane right before they get to you like they are doing you a favor

Just do what you would want someone else to do in that situation. And if you're not sure, idle by. Stop before you get to them and start up after you've passed.

Pretty much sums it up right there. Except for catch back of course.

Live by the rule you are responsible for your wake. Also slow down as often as possible when people are fishing always best to try and not piss people off. Sometimes there are people who stay pissed however.

All good advice except when in a main channel. If you fish in a main channel/river/bayou you should not expect people to come off plane. I had someone flip me off today while headed back to the landing down the main channel in Pigeon, that guy can kiss my arse. No way I would expect anyone to slow down for me in that situation.

Side note: never cut in front of the line of trucks waiting for the ramp. African American fella tried that this morning and it didn't work out well for him. He just about got the beat down from the coonass a couple trucks in front of me.

If you pass by me, hammer it. Half throttle = more boat in water which = bigger wake.

If the canal is 50 yds wide or less slow down to no wake.

X2

I give as wide of a berth as possible to anyone on the water. However if you choose to fish in the main channel or only channel available expect to get rocked just as I would if I chose to fish there.

It depends on how close you have to pass. If you have to pass close lay it down. It's a safety issue and not a wake issue.

If you can pass "far enough," stay on it. It's a simple thing that some people can't figure out.
