Boat trailer title question.

So I'm looking at buying a boat from a bank who repo'd it a few weeks back. Everything is solid and I've been waiting for them to get paperwork in order so I could buy it. Got a text from a bank representative today who said they were having trouble getting the title for the trailer, so they will drop the price (very slightly)and sell it with a bill of sale only because they don't feel like messin with it anymore. It is a manufactured trailer with outdated plate and tags on it. Paperwork on the boat is all in order. What do you think it would take to get a title if I buy it as is? Is there any other route besides tracking down the previous owner? Bank said they asked the DMV and they didn't have any records of the trailer at all. Maybe the tags aren't legit for this trailer and it was never registered to begin with. Any experience or suggestions appreciated.

You will need to get the papers from the OMV and get a state police inspection. Once you get that, they will issue title and plate

Maybe it's just me but I would never buy a boat owned by someone who didn't take care of the easy stuff like maintaining the documents on a trailer. Food for thought. Hope the boat is okay but I'd be wary.

Was the boat/trailer originally purchased in Louisiana?
If not, the trailer may not have been required to be registered/titled. I know that's how it is in Alabama. I bought a boat/trailer from a private seller and had to have the trailer inspected by a LEO as if it were a home made trailer and then I could get it registered and titled.

Just give me the Name of the bank rep and tell them that I will take care of it. You can borrow it sometime.

Just dealt with this on an out of state boat from bama. Just bring the bill of sale to omv office and state police inspection in baton Rouge and have it inspected then take that paperwork to dmv and bam registered and title. That's what I had to do being bama doesn't title or register trailers

It is that easy assuming the trailer has visible VIN numbers on it. Boat trailers, and trailers in general often don't have good VIN markings on them, or the VIN labels have fallen off, and it makes them hard to identify.

Thanks for all the help. I think I might try and go ahead with purchasing the rig (at a decreased price for my troubles) and try to get it titled. Hopefully it all goes through!

So I told my buddy who was my contact in this transaction what my decision was, that I was ready to make an offer for the rig without trailer title, because I figured the risk was worth the reward (it was a hell of a deal). I didn't hear back for about 16 hours, and when I did he informed me he made an offer and bought the whole set up. So now he owns the boat/motor/trailer and I was screwed out the whole deal because I did the homework and let him know how good the deal really was. So thanks for the help OB but I guess I'm stuck with my old rig for a while.

Some buddy he is... Only thing left for you to do is drop a molotov cocktail in the boat in his driveway.
