The bearings were shot so I bought some new ones. The axle studs are in great condition. In the kits I bought, the hub and bearings were already preassembled and greased. They also came with the lugs and the dust cap. I popped them on the axle and tightened down the castle nut. There is a 1-1.5 inch space in between the nut and the hub/bearing. I noticed that the old hubs had a little wiggle before I took them off. There is significantly more wiggle with the new ones. Am I missing something? I know I have the right size hubs as far as the axle stud goes. The bearings are snug. There just seems to be too much room on the axle stud for the new ones? Am I missing something? Do I need some sort of spacer? TIA

Wrong size hub if u have that much space between nut and outer bearing. Nut should tighten (hand tighten) all the way against bearing then tighten 1/4 turn with wrench

I bought the only 5 lug kit that Tractor Supply had. Who else might carry the size I need?

Yea.

I think we had to go to motion industries to find the right hubs for our boat trailer when we replaced them, I remember it being harder to find i.e. wasn't any that size at the big napa in laplace where we got the utility trailer hubs from

Agreed. I have seen the kits come without the large washer that goes between the bearing and nut so check that. Try to tighten down on the nut some more if you are sure it is the right one. You should be able to tighten it until the hub can not even be rotated, if you can't it is the wrong hub.

I still have the old washer but it is not near big enough. The threads on the spindle are clearly well short of where the bearing sits when pushed all of the way in. If I tightened the nut anywhere near the bearing the cotter pin would be a half inch from the castle nut.

I've had good experiences with this place on airline.

Might also want to get galvanized hubs if your trailer is galvanized.

Ya got the wrong hub for sure. If the old one is not damaged just knock the bearings and races out and take them to a parts house. They can match them up usually. Replace and tow on. It's pretty easy and cheaper than replacing the hub. Once you figure out how to do it keep a set of spares handy.

There are two sizes of hubs for boat trailers that are similar. There's 1 inch and 1 1/16 inch. Both sizes have 4 and 5 lugs. Sounds like you bought a 1 1/16 hub and need a 1 inch hub.
