Boat Maintenance Situation
I always seem to get myself into these situations...

Back story:

A friend of a friend has a new boat dealership that has been open a couple of years. We hang out at Mardi Gras and our mutual friend introduces us and says, "Clyde has a boat and fishes all the time. Give him a card..."

I'm recently separated from my last boat maintenance guy so I agree that I'll bring it in for service after spring.

I take it in about a month ago and get a fast turn around time of about 15 days. Impressive because he was slammed busy. I asked to service the motor, change the water impellar, fix trailer lights and wiring, and fix live well fill.

I go to pick it up, and motor is running great, new trailer lights all working and when they do the live well switch, I can hear a buzzing sound of a pump running. I was also billed for a 7.5 gpm pump on my invoice. All good, so I pay the guy. He doesn't cut any sweet heart deal, but it was a fair price for what I had done.

I go to Toledo 3 days later and as I'm motoring out I cut on the live well just to make sure everything is legit. It's not. The buzzing sound was the aerator. It's bubbling, but only the 3 inches that sit in the live well from leveling out with the outside water level. I flip the fill switch to pump it full of water, but it does not work.

So after the weekend, I take my boat back up to the shop. Such is my luck, the "guy I know" is not there. New guy at the desk ask my for my name and phone number and begins writing out a new service ticket. I tell him the live well fill pump is not working. He ask what else I need done. I reply, "Nothing. My boat was just in here for maintenance last week. The live well issue was supposed to be addressed." He stops writing, looks up at me, and goes right back to writing on the new service ticket.

"What's the make and model?" He asks.

I tell him and he says, "Just drop it in the parking lot and we'll get to it as soon as possible, we're pretty busy."

I say, "Well at least follow me out there so I can show you what switch corresponds with what I need running so there is no confusion." He huffs and puffs and follows me outside. As I am trying to show him he gives me the, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got it... We fix these all the time."

Just not on mine obviously.

So my question is, how fricked am I? Do you think they will bill me? Do you think it will have any priority since it was just in there and the issue was not fixed? Did I rub this guy the wrong way for pointing out their failures?

I don't want to be that guy that has to call a friend, to call this guy, to make sure he "takes care of me".

How do I constantly get myself into this shit?

IF you get out of this situation with any money left in your account, find someone else.

And never listen to friends; online reviews tell you what you need to know

re: Boat Maintenance Situation
i'd have done the same.

Good to be friends with a boat maintenance guy who's number is saved in your phone...saved me on the water the other day.

If they charged you for it the first time i'd make damn sure they don't charge you again.

That's my biggest concern. The time is no big deal, as I do not have any plans to fish the next weekend or two.

I just get a bad feeling the new guy with the new service ticket is not going to investigate whether or not I was recently in there and what I paid for vs. what I received in working order. I think he is going to go with the just bill it at the standard rate and dare me to say something when I pick it up.

Which would be awkward with the original guy who I met.

re: Boat Maintenance Situation
You could save alot of money changing stuff like that out yourself. You hear any sound at all when you turn the switch on? Checked the switch?

If it is the pump just cut the wire, pull it out, and order new one on ebay

I know, I've changed it before. I had to remove the gas tank to get under it to access the pump. Turned out to be a pain in the butt when it was all done. I needed a handful of things done, and this is my friends buddy's new business. I don't mind paying for service and having someone else responsible if it's not done right.

Eta: I just didn't expect to pull that card on our first encounter.

Now that I think about it, my gas tank still had a fine film of dust and grease on it. Didn't appear that it was ever removed to check the fill pump.

dude. there are no good boat guys anywhere. I've said it in other posts. I don't know what it is, but all of them suck either in their work or their communication or their promises to deliver.

That's exactly what I need.

I was just telling the story to my boss and he said, "Why didn't you stop the new guy from writing a new service ticket, and tell him to shut his fricking mouth and listen to you until he fully understands what's going on?"

I was like, "Because normal people don't act like that?"

I'm willing to give them a chance to make it right without me being an a-hole, however, 9 times out of 10 they try to screw the nice guy. So I'm not holding my breath...

re: Boat Maintenance Situation
Any shop worth a shite offers a warranty on their work. A 30 day warranty on shop work is pretty standard as long as the complaint is the same as your original work order it should be covered by the dealer. Be patient with the service writer. The number of boaters who claim something is a shop comeback with the reality being the problem is unrelated to original work is astonishing. That is why he is skeptical.

Any place worth 2 shits will have a service record on your boat. Hell, I bought a Tundra from Bubba Oustalet back in 2008 and they've been emailing me saying there are good incentives to trade it in on a new one, now.

Clyde have you ever used Raymond Kidd owner of the Boat Shop / right across from Great Raft?

He serviced my Crownline flawlessly for 6 years. I highly recommend.

I have not, but I will book mark this thread. There have already been a couple of suggestions I've never heard of that I may need at a later date.

And y'all don't take this thread the wrong way. I haven't named the place because I'm not upset with them. I can just see the corner I've been painted into, and we'll see what happens when it's all said and done.
