boat gps recommendation?

I'm updating an older Garmin 540s with the new sd card (that my unit won't recognize anymore) to something with a bigger screen. What's the best gps/depth finder combo with updated southeast louisiana marsh maps for under $1000?

Lowrance units seem to have the best options for mapping cards.
WHODAT514 makes mapping cards. I'm sure he will drop in here at some point.

I have a lowrance hds 7. Very detailed for our marshes . No complaints

I think the Garmin units are more user friendly but love the features on my dads HDS 9 and it looks a little newer age. It's kinda just personal preference but those are the 2 I've used for the last several years.

If you're looking for a new unit, the Lowrance elite 7 ti w/ totalscan is the way to go in that price range. Make sure you're getting to totalscan transducer though. Should run about $800
Otherwise but a used lowrance hds 7 gen 2 touch with the lss-2 transducer included. Essentially the same capabilities just an older unit. Probably can find one in the $500-600 range if you're patient.
I own and am a big fan of the raymarine dragonfly series but their menus are horifically difficult to navugate. They need to upgrade the UI before I recommend them to casual users. Technically though, both the transducers and the screens and their wifi, are top notch.

Any lowrance unit will work with my cards. I have the hds gen 2 touch and really like it. The elite ti is a good unit as well. It's basically a hds with less features. They also have the older elite and newer hook units. All have good features and will use my mapping cards.
You can find hds units on sale and the hook series as well.

Thanks for the recs. Looks like Lowrance is what I'm going with. I don't need many features. I only use the depth finder and would like a detailed marsh map. I don't need a fancy sonar for reading every contour or oyster shell.
I'm buying a unit in the next week or so, how could I get one of your cards?

**cough cough** so do I
I knew I'd see your name in here before I got to the bottom I'm catching up. I've been on a hot streak lately. I just had to order 10 more cards.

You can get the HDS 9 Gen 2 units brand new from Russel Marine on bass boat central for $1000. I also use the LA ONE card that's made by Standard Mapping. The card is expensive but it's very detailed.

Here is my 7 HDI from my last boat with my map (same as whodat's map). You can get this for $500-600. Will do everything the average guy needs.
Here is my hds 7 gen 3. It's about $4-500 out of your price range but worth it. Gen 2 may be in your range but new generations come out like I phones. May as well get today's version IMO. The Processor is super fast. I like linking it to my yamaha and the sonic hub/NEMA 2k capability (HDI should have these capabilities now)

Personally I'd spring for a Simrad NSS7. I'm on my first Simrad. I've had Lowrance and Garmin, and used others but never very extensively. The Simrad interface is the best I've used by far. The unit itself is really fast and I haven't had any problems. Simrad and Lowrance are both Navico. Simrad is just a step up.
I have a card from another OB user in mine and love it.

Not 100% positive but I'm pretty sure the HDI units will only support NEMA 2000 when connecting a marine radio or other units. I do not think they will support engine diagnostics.

I purchased a humminbird core unit on a similar sale like the lowrance units and I have been pleased. Lakemaster has a map card, HCLD1, pretty much south of I 10 from Texas to Mississippi.
