specifically for the Cocodrie area.

at our family camp we have an older 24ft bay boat that has served very well, but belongs to my father and uncle. I've had the itch for a while to start heading offshore every now and then, or at least be able to make the annual snapper run. But i'm not so comfortable doing that in our current bay boat.

I've also had the itch for a while to get a money pit of my own, but have struggled with the idea of what boat could suit both needs. I would be doing more inshore, but want that ability to run out when possible and feel comfortable doing it.

is there a correct answer to this situation?
are twins the only answer to going offshore?
anyone fish inshore with twins?

appreciate any opinions you can offer.

Canyon Bay has a good hybrid. Panga Marine has some models in 20-26ft that would be a good option as well. Someone recently landed a swordfish solo from a 22 ft panga out of Venice.

YES
YES
YES

I have a 20' twin vee with twin 70hp Zukes. (center console w/ T Top)) The boat has the fishing area of a larger boat. In fact from plan view (From the air) its almost, fishing area wise, like a large flat boat. Soft ride for my back. Piece of mind of having 2 motors when going off shore. Good gas mileage. Its not fast...tops out at 34 mph but it will also do that loaded out. I also do a lot of speck fishing inside.

And I mostly fish out of Venice for trout and snapper in the same day.

I know someone (a poster here's dad) who runs an older cape horn 24 with twins to timbalier. I watched the boat get in a foot of water this past weekend, and it's also been offshore many times. There are boats out there that will do both, just need to shop around. Florida is probably your best place to look, what your describing is more popular there.

No, but not having twins will severely limit you from a safety and range standpoint. I've been offshore in a single engine plenty of times and felt safe, but we didn't go that far and weather was good. It really will boil down to how much time you think you'll spend offshore. Will you be inside mostly and only run out on calm days, or will you want the ability to go even if the conditions aren't perfect?

Look hard at the Black Jack for what you describe.
Bryce that owns Topwater Charters in Cocodrie runs em if you want to take a look at them. I believe he even has one for sale right now.

I have a 20 ft. Mako CC that handles both inshore and light offshore pretty well. I'm not going out in 3-5s but it works.

I'd look at a CC, non bay boat. It is perfect for most of Cocodrie

This. But if the OP wants to get skinny for redfish, he might have some issues.

There are lots of boats that can fish skinny and fish the islands for trout. And there a plenty of boat that will fish the islands for trout and be able to hop offshore. There are scant few (maybe 0) boats that can fish the ponds for reds and run in 3-5s or get 50+ miles offshore with any reasonable level of comfort.

If you want to fish reds, trout and do a once a year offshore trip, just pay someone to take you offshore.

I was faced with this problem two years ago. I have three children and needed something with the room and also wouldn't beat them up. Lets face it you are basically offshore once you are between the marsh and what is left of the islands. It is more often than not 1.5-2 ft stacked chop on the lakes. I went with what would seem to most to be a pure offshore boat. I bought an older worldcat 266SF center console with twin 175 suzuki four strokes. Holds 240 gallons of gas and you can sip a beer in anything short of stacked 3 ft seas. Only draws 12-15" at the stern and doesn't squat on take off. I can get anywhere most bay boats can go just can't troll motor around. Plus a used rig like mine is cheaper than most bay boats for sale. Just something to think about.

as others suggested the blackjack in a 224 or the new 256 both with the Yamaha 300. they are great boats and will do what you would like to do. I have the frontier 2104 which is made by them and ive fished inshore then went out a couple miles and caught snapper.

seapickle I saw that boat but the motor is a deal breaker as well..they are hard to come by and when you find a deal its gone.
