Looking for some advice from some of you guys who have had to make similar decisions...

I'm looking to buy a boat. My price range is fairly wide. Figure to spend at least 5000 to 15k ish... This boat would be used mostly for duck hunting. I won't use it exclusively for duck hunting, but it's why I'm making this purchase. I'd use the boat in the flats, and the atchafalaya delta. Most times launching and hunting the wax. It's hard for me to decide between an outboard and a surface drive.

Past couple years I've hunted with buddies than ran outboards (40hp). Running 30 mph loaded down was nice. We were also able to get in fairly shallow places, but there's no doubt we were limited on where we could go. I also made a few hunts out of boats with surface drives. The ride there and back sucked, but we never had to push a boat and got wherever we wanted.

This is a purchase I'll make next year for next year. I want to find the boat that'll fit my wants/needs best. I appreciate any advice.

I have a surface drive and I hunted the wax this year and it didn't matter that I had a surface drive when the tide fell. Also, before I realized I wasn't going to move with my motor, I ate the prop up pretty good in the sand. Still had to get out and pull the boat to deeper water. So I'd rather an outboard in the wax to get there and back faster. In the swamp, I'd rather my gtr.

Tunnel hull with a big engine strapped on back. Served many Cajuns finely for many years in Pecan Island.

or you could find a used 37gtr and send it to delta performance. They're getting about 34 unload on an 1854 with a stage 3. So 3 guys and a dog you should see 30/31.

As long as you don't want the 3 year warranty and can afford the $3,000 it will cost, this is a good idea. I was going to suggest this same idea but figured with a $15k budget, he'd really have to skimp on the boat. I didn't want to give up my warranty and drop $3000 extra to gain that little bit of speed when I bought mine. I'm running 28mph, about to put on a worked Mercury 3 blade, and hopefully I'll be running 30. Which is fine with me.

Very true. And honestly, 28 isn't bad for a stock engine. Ya you may lose 2 or 3 mph with a surface drive compared to a 40 outboard, but you can literally run in 2/3 inches of water, and if you hit a floating log going 28 in a surface drive, you don't have to purchase a 1000 dollar lower unit. Purchase of new pants will be required though.

Good ideas here. If I go surface drive I know I'm going to have to fork up some more cash. How do you guys feel about purchasing used surface drives? Can save some money... Also, what's the OB's preferred mud boat setup?

If you don't know what you're looking at/for, bring somebody with you who does. I have multiple friends who have purchased used surface drives over the past year, and they have all run flawlessly. All a surface drive is is a fancy lawnmower engine.

There are about 500 different mud boat setups, its all about what you're going to do with it. Go look at gtr's website. a 4/5 foot front deck with running lights and back box and a gun box is a pretty standard setup. If you want to really spend some money you can go custom with somebody like prodigy or gator trax, and thats where it starts to get expensive.

Though I haven't actually got the chance to drive a center console gtr, I think if I ever do build one, a center console will be the way I go. Just sit back and cruise.

$15k budget probably won't get you very far at prodigy. If you can fit a little more into your budget, definitely go prodigy. I just got a prodigy last month with a 37efi gtr and I love it. I went that route because even though it cost a little more, I got exactly what I wanted and when they sent the pics the first time and I wanted something done differently, they changed it that same day before going any farther with the build. I love my gatortail though. it's slower than an outboard, but I'm fine with that and the prodigy boat is super comfortable.
