I know someone who was given a citation for improper navigation lights because the red and green lights weren't visible while using the LED bar.

Put up a red and green set.

Yeah we gonna fix it. I just wanted to make others aware. A PSA so to speak.

While they were running, or just idling?

Running, using the bar to see where they were going.

ETA: My setup is exactly like the one pictured. Light bar is above the navigation lights but the brightness drowns out the green and red lights.

That is exactly how mine looks also. Pretty stupid if you can't see a light bar coming. I'm going to rock it until I get caught I guess

Put a red and green led on either side.

What I would do personally is to remove a row of leds on each side (not too hard with soldering skills) and replace each with the proper color. That would solve the problem when using the light bar. when not using the light bar the standard nav lights would be fine.

While you're at it.... Make sure you have a strap/turnuckle/chain going from the tow eye on your boat straight down to the trailer. It's illegal not to have it.

All y'all saying "just put a red and a green on it" have any idea why the red/green is designed the way it is?

So is the led bar being used as a your all around light or masthead light? If it's being used as docking light or "headlight" while underway, it's illegal.

It's illegal for good reason too. Another good example of why boating licenses should be mandatory.

This makes no sense to me. You can't use a light to see where you are going? If your in a crowded water way , I understand you shouldn't use it because it blinds everyone, a q beam should be used. But in any other place I don't see a difference.

Exactly if I am running down a creek channel it's a whole lot better than holding a q beam while driving.

Driver license are mandatory and look how many idiots are on the highways. I mean, do they even put turn signals on cars these days.
Both mini-mag and I have taken the boater safety course and up close the red and green nav lights are visible, nobody thought to walk farther than my driveway and look when we installed the bar, figured anything over ahunnerd yards away was irrelevant.

I agree with another poster though, had the mini-mag waited until he was out of civilization instead of burning green jeans with 9600 lumens there'd have been no issue.

Don't forget there is purpose of red and green as the choice of colors. When running at night if you can see the red light only you must yield to the other vessel in most cases. Many people don't realize this.

The white lights are nice but also ruin your night vision. When possible I run with only legal running lights and keep light bars and q beams off. Of course in a timber area this is not easily done.

Will do, thanks for the heads up. I know my bayboat just has the winch strap, bass boat has both, and uncertain about mudboat.

Yea I don't use them unless I have to if I know I am pretty much by myself on the lake I won't even turn on the light bar. Like you said mostly only use it in the timber.
