Hadn't heard that one in a while.
Fine piece.

I know every glock I've ever handled was like trying to hold onto a brick. Couldn't wrap my paws around it comfortably. Never grabbed ahold of a 43 though.

Took me a while to get used to the width of the glock 21.

First of all, it's hard to say which one is "best" since one may be better than others at other things. I carry a Kahr CM9 which is one of the smallest carry 9mms out there. It's very reliable and a great gun but I can tell you without a doubt that the recoil impulse of something slightly heavier (Shield, XDs) beats up your hands less.

It would be nice to switch it up if I can find something reliable.

Of all the guns you listed, with the exception of the G43 since it's still new, all of them will be reliable. It's hard to find an unreliable gun from a quality manufacturer these days. The processes are streamlined and very precise for them to spit out tons of reliable handguns. I'm sure the Glock 43 will end up being a home run but we won't know until the market saturates a bit and they are truly tested.

I think the "best" all-around single stack 9mm is probably the M&P Shield and these are my reasons compared to the others (only my opinion):

1. Can be purchased without a thumb safety - The Sig P938 requires deactivating the safety on the draw, every. single. time. If you forget it can cost you your life.

2. It isn't overly large but not overly small. It is an ideal carry piece for inside the waistband carry. My Kahr is great in my waistband too but the tad bit of extra weight and capacity would not make it uncomfortable to carry. If the Shield had been out when I purchased my CM9, I would probably be the owner of one.

3. It has no grip safety to worry about. Even though the grip safety on the XDs is considered a "passive" safety it's still an extra speed bump that could be disastrous when you really need it. Have I seen them have issues before? No, but Mr. Murphy is always right around the corner.

4. The Shield has metal sights. That makes it beat out the CM9 (plastic front) and the G43 (plastic rear).

5. It may show my bias as a S&W man but the ergonomics on the Shield are tops when it comes to single stack 9mms.

6. The trigger on the Shield is considerably better than its full sized counterparts. I don't know why but I've compared it to tons of full sized ones and it's true.

7. Track record - the Shield took the single stack 9mm market by storm and continues to sell very well. The "recall" it had wasn't even a functional issue and was moreso a precautionary warning to cover their asses.

Hopefully this wasn't too long-winded. Obviously I think the Shield is the best overall option but all the guns you listed are reliable so that should not be a concern when making your purchase.

If you opt for a Shield, they can routinely be found for $339ish online, which is a steal

I've held my buddy's p938 and it fit my hand well for being a small pistol. Are they reliable?

Any of the ones listed and many that are not will go pew when the trigger is pulled. Quit over thinking it, find one that fits and buy it.

By the time this thread ends you're going to have a LONG list because there are a LOT of good single stack semi-auto 9mm's for concealed carry. Most everyone's going to recommend the ss 9 they use and that's only natural. Having said that, the "best" one will be determined by YOU and your criteria. A lot of fine candidates have been mentioned already, but a few good 9mm single stacks that have not been mentioned that are worthy of your consideration include: Beretta Nano, Kimber Solo, Walther PPS and Kahw CW9. Although I don't have a CW9, I have a CW45 and it has an active role in my cc rotation. You need to sit down, decide what YOUR criteria are and eliminate some contenders. No one here can tell you what your criteria are. For example, do you want an external safety lever? Do you prefer a DAO trigger (like the Kahrs and LC-9) or a striker trigger? Do you want an adjustable backstrap? You get the idea. In addition, many, but not all, of the above guns are small enough to be comfortably carried in pants pockets. This is how I usually carry my Ket-Tec PF9 during the spring and summer. Although I like the 1911 platform (heck, I cc a Commander for 20 hours yesterday), I don't like the Sig 938 for pocket carry. I think the 1911 should be carried cocked and locked. Carried this way, I worry the external hammer on the 938 might snag on the draw; plus the hammer being cocked looks like it would make a nice place for lint to get down into the frame.

Kahr is better than all of these listed.

Just wanted to update the thread and let yall know I tried out the xds 9, shield, lc9s pro and sig p938. I was torn between the shield and the lc9s pro but I ended up going with the Ruger. The lc9s pro has a nice trigger out of the box and was noticeably lighter than the other guns. I ran about 150 rounds through it with no jams or misfires. I was surprised at how accurate I shot with it considering how small it is. If anyone is in the market for a cc gun, you cant go wrong with the shield or the lc9s pro. Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions.

Good to hear you made a quality choice! I hated that the original LC9 had a bad DAO trigger and a mag disconnect safety. But since the addition of the striker-Pro, it seems they listened to their customers and made a quality gun. Ruger is very good about listening to their loyal customers.

If you're interested in having it reviewed by me sometime and are in the Baton Rouge area, let me know.

I agree. I fired my buddies original lc9 and absolutely hated the trigger. The original DAO trigger was gritty and long. The new striker fired trigger on the lc9s pro is very good. Its surprisingly better than my sr9c and glock. I liked the fit, finish and grip on the shield a little better than the ruger. However, the ruger's trigger and action seemed much smoother than the shield. Thanks again for the suggestions
