Want to get my son a new scope for his rifle for Christmas. $300 is the absolute most money I can spend on this purchase.

I hear good things about the Vortex Diamondback 4-12X40, which I can get for around $200. Also hear Redfield and Nikon Prostaffs are good for the money. What else should I consider?

$300

Wont get you much from the OB lol.

I've got a Redfield revolution that I've thoroughly enjoyed. Dad has a Nikon buckmaster that's good as well. Stick with nikon, leupold, redfield, and vortex > $200 and you should be pretty good. You may be able to get a Leopold vx2 for around that...if so, that's your answer.

ebay

I've got the Nikon pro staff 3x9x50 on 2 of my rifles and am very satisfied. Very clear and bright. I'd recommend to anyone. Think I paid $199 at academy a couple years back.

Leupold VX1 can be had for about $200. That's what I would get. I'm a whore for Leupold scopes.

There's a plethora of very good $200 scopes out there from Leupold, Nikon, Redfeild, vortex, etc.

Buy him a nice $200 scope and put the $100 you saved in your rainy day fund

On my biggest dislikes about this board is that no matter what you post as your budget for anything, a pile of people are going to suggest you add 10% to it.

I scoped out my neighbors wife earlier for free

Hell of a deal IMO

I didn't really find it to be a problem in my 9mm thread but I've seen it before.. sometimes it's justified though

I just went through this and compared several scopes in the same price range you are looking at. I ended up with a Nikon Prostaff 5 in 2.5x10x40.

My choices were down to the Vortex Diamondback for $199 and the Nikon Prostaff 5 for $229. A friend that I trust has both scopes (his Vortex is actually the Diamondback HP model which is a step up) and put them side by side to compare brightness, clarity, and ease of use... he advised me to buy the Nikon so I went with it.

Me too, and the VX-2 in 3-9x40 can be had for $299.

eta: $265 on amazon prime if you're willing to wait a few days for it to ship.

Where did you find the Prostaff 5 for that price, if I may? I just looked at one and a vortex Viper side by side at BPS. It was close, but to my eye the Nikon was the winner.

Give the Burris fullfield a look. I have had two and both were great.
