I am looking to get my father just a reel (not a rod and reel combo, unless you have a great one) for his upcoming birthday. Mostly fishes for trout and red out of Hopedale/Shell Beach. My budget is $150-200. I was hoping I could seek out some suggestions from this board to get him the right rig.
Thanks!

Stradic..
The ci4 is a little more, but it's REAL nice.

I've got a 20-30 year old PENN that my grandfather gave me when I was 12. I have no clue how long he had it before he gave it to me. I'm 33. It is still one of my favorite reels.

PENN battle 2500 or 3000 depending on your needs. I have a 2000 and 2500 and the only difference is the spool size.

I think I may go with the Ci4. Not much out of my price range

I have a couple older models and I'm about to pick up a new model. They are great reels and unbelievably light.
Go with the 2500 or 3000. Only difference is spool size. I use 3000 just because.

Stella/Van Staal or nothing!
Honestly though, I do have a few Shimano Sustains that are noticeably higher quality than other reels. It may not be worth $350 to most people, but I got them for cheap and they changed my mind as to whether or not it was worth it. I'd pay full price in the future.
Stradic's are definitely worth their price tag though and should be right in that price range.
Also, like poster above said, I'd go for a 2500. I like the smallest reel that will work. And on Shimano, you can buy the 3000 spool and swap it out if you need more line capacity. It's the only difference and the spools are cheap.

I had a 10000 Sustain. I liked it a lot but it got pulled in and I lost it.
I replaced it with a Saragosa. The Sustain had a lot of reviews with big fish killing the drag. I never had that problem, but for the money, I looked elsewhere.

I'm guessing the higher dollar shimano's last longer? I've had the worst luck with sahara's & symetre's so I recently switched to the Penn Battle 2 in 3000 size.

Granted I probably take a bit better care of my more expensive reels, but they definitely hold up better. I have older Sienna and Sahara reels that feel a little rough. Had a few mechanical issues. My sustains have been hanging in the garage for 2 years and I took one down to practice casting again the other day and it was smooth as butter. And those were the only spinning reels I used once I got them.

I have a battle and a CI4+. They are both very good reels. The penn is very tough but the Stradic feels like weighs half of the penn. I prefer it. Also all of the parts are available and its pretty easy to break down, and clean.

Shimano Stradic. They hold up extremely well. I have 4 and have never had a problem. I have the newest model in 2500. Holds plenty of line (Braid) and has 20 lb drag (more than enough)for inshore fishing.

I have an older Stradic and the new model stradic. Both 3000 series. I'm not entirely sure why people recomend or want the 2500. Their is absolutely no difference in size or weight. The only difference is the 3000 spool is deeper. Why not be able to carry a little more like for nothing.
But to me there is absolutely no comparison between the battle II and the Stradic. Yeah the battle II is great for a reel that will last but it's not ok the stradics level.
Also if you think he would enjoy it look at the carbon drag washer kits. They are much smoother they will hold up 1000X better than the felt washers the stradics come with when a big red runs hard and they are maybe less than five dollars. I also like swapping out all of the plastic bushings with ceramic bearings. I don't remember all of the ones I swapped out but I know for sure I swapped out two inside of the handle. It makes for a smooth real that seemingly never stops spinning. Not necessary at all but definitely cool. For the money though I really recomend the carbon drag washers.
