It requires two hands and considerable body force to swing effectively.
It is not an agile defense weapon it is a crude bludgeoning weapon.
Nails make small puncture wounds not deep slices that cause more damage.
3" of penetration is considered the minimum deadly depth for blows to the vital organs in the thoracic cavity. Most nails (even 16D) are less than 3.5 and you will need at least .5 inch in the bat.
When you swing and it gets stuck in the wall you are now helpless.
Good points. Though I like the bat assuming you can get the drop on someone and have the space to swing.

I would suggest looking into a tazer. The name gets co-mingled with various types weapon but, I'm referring to the system that fires probes connected to the weapon. You can keep distance and still incapacitate most intruders.
One thing I would not recommend for home defense is pepper spray. Using it in close quarters can easily incapacitate you just as much as the intruder.

Also you can get:
black cats, Roman Candles, screaming mimis, lady fingers, fuzz buttles, snicker bombs, church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippity do das, crap flappers, whistlin' bungholes, spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, and whistlin' kitty chasers
But snakes and sparklers are all I like.

I'm also not very familiar with these kinds of vaults. I obviously want something that is both very accessible in the event of an emergency but ABSOLUTELY FOOLPROOF.
Fort Knox vault w/ Simplex lock. No batteries required. This is what we use at my house.

Plenty more versions, makes, prices out there.

It ain't about you, it's the consumer.

If you don't want to defend with lethal force, then I recommend you just prepare to cooperate. You can try tasers and whatnot, but you don't want to bring a taser, baton, golf club, baseball bat, etc., to a gun fight.
That's a high risk/low reward proposition.

Riot shield and a taser?
I guess a panic room with a really loud alarm would be better than nothing?

JPX makes a pepper gun that is also carried by Law Enforcement. Shooting someone in the face closer than 5 ft could cause serious injury or death and is good up to 20 ft or so. The knocks on it is the trigger pull is stiff and some times the first trigger pull will not strike the primer just right and you have to pull it again.

Wasp spray is a fantastic idea
I can tell you from first hand experience that pepper spray - even the stuff that comes out in a stream - will affect everyone in the room, not just the intruder. I dunno about wasp spray but I can't imagine that stuff is much different.

I bet wasp spray to the face would frick somebody up pretty bad. Never thought of that.
I'd use it all to kill wasps the 2nd day I had it and once again be defenseless though.

+1 to this. Most people think pepper spray is just pepper and water. But the mace concoctions that they make now have some ridiculous potency. They are designed to make every mucus membrane in your face go haywire while simultaneously making it impossible for you to open your eyes or breathe.
But like I said earlier, this relies on the other person to perceive the pain. If they are on drugs, it is much less effective than a firearm and a physical stop is necessary.

I bought some wireless, battery powered motion detectors from Harbor Freight for around the house. They were like fifteen dollars. The motion detector is weather resistant.
I even screwed one to a post by my wife's car. It has been great. I put the beeper by the window so people outside will be able to hear and know they have been detected. It is also loud enough for me to hear. It has been a great first line of defense/notification.

It is worth noting that the range is significantly shorter than advertised. It is probably more like ten feet.
