Best Dives in Florida

I'm looking to take a long weekend (3-4 day) trip to Florida, preferably between Pensacola and Panama City. What are your favorite dives? Any wrecks that you would highly recommend?

Black Bart is pretty cool in the PCB area. I still would love to do the carrier, but it settling on its side makes it a more technical dive than most would enjoy.

The Bart and the Strength are good. Most of the ops in PC will hit one of the wrecks and one of the bridge spans. Most of the sites are now holding at least on Goliath grouper. The Oriskany is great, but unless you are a tech diver your dive will be relatively short.

I'm advanced but not tech. 130' is still the limit.

I dove the 3 barges (35' to 40'), The Russian Freighter(90') and one other wreck I forgot the name in relatively shallow water. Spent a few days and dove each location multiple times.
They were cool dives. The freighter was cool, but you got the least amount of bottom time. You can hang out on the shallower ones much longer as you know.

The Oriskaney is an aircraft carrier off the coast of pensacola. I think it's between 90' & 120' depending on what part of the ship you're diving. If I still was into diving, I would love to see that.

For all you guys who dive, were you scared before your first dive? Did it vanish the first time you hit the water or do you still get nervous? It just seems like the coolest thing in the world, but I have this tremendous fear of things out there that are out to get me. I wonder if it's common and I just need to get past it or is it something that would stick with me.

Diver sucked into Fl power plant cooling pipe. He lives but I bet he needed a new wetsuit.

Have you done the Crystal River yet?
Good for a day or so and there are some dive boats that go out of there to deeper water.

What exactly are you afraid of? I was very nervous at first but it was mostly about my gear and the thought of something failing. As for being afraid of marine life... no. I've been diving for years and have only seen a shark once, and it was about 60 yards away.
If the dive portion of it makes you nervous, try a beginner course at a local dive shop. The ones with pools will typically let you jump in the shallow end with all the gear for only a few bucks.

This. I know the second I stick my toe in the water a Mako or some shite is going to come up and get me. I have a buddy who used to dive for the Navy and he said the same thing, he's only seen a shark once. I just find that hard to believe, yak fishing offshore in Pensacola, I see them about every other trip or so.
I don't think I have any fear of gear failing...granted I haven't ever put any on. I guess I should just the fear of something getting me out of my mind and just do it. It looks amazing.

it is, and as soon as you hit the water and start to see all this new stuff you will forget about jaws coming to get you.
i've been diving since 1994 and the only time i've seen sharks diving was in the bahamas where they feed them in front of you.
seeing a shark cruise by unprovoked/baited-in is really rare.

If you go out looking for them, sure. You can absolutely find them.
It truly is one of the most exciting experiences. 72% of the Earth is covered by water and you don't really understand how deep and vast it is until you jump into a new environment.
Also, snorkeling is the most miserable thing ever. It does not compare. The only down side to diving is the expense but the certification is only about $350 and it's good for life.

Damn. Y'all are making me want to get it done. Would y'all recommend 7 seas? They are right around the corner from work. I don't think I know of any other places in town.

Better?
I don't plan on getting a tech cert any time soon. There is plenty to see in the first 130'.
As for the shops in BR, I haven't been to Seven Seas but I know Underwater Adventures has great staff. I got my open water at Harrys in NOLA and Nitrox/Advanced from Divers Destination in Laffy.

I just got back from Cozumel where I saw this guy eating on the grass beds.

So it only costs $350 to get certified? What do you think the total cost to get into it is? Certification and all the gear... I know that's pretty vague. I'd like to do some spearfishing.
Posted on 3/9/16 at 10:42 am to DownSouthDave
You will just keep throwing money at it but it's worth it
If you want to go all out, get certified, own your gear, start spearfishing, you're probably looking at the $1500-2000 range.
