Got a cousin going to the Lake Borgne area who asked me. I'm not sure what to tell him as I have only been duck hunting a couple of times.

I use a modified for nearly everything, minus doves.

Buy the cheapest shells and use a MOD choke.

I posted this in the other choke thread but I'll do it again.

Patternmaster extended range in my SP10
Kicks XFULL in my SBEII

Full disclosure, I can't hit shite with either of them.

The geese fold at 80 yards with that patternmaster and 10 gauge heavy metal 2s.

Tried all the super full and extra fulls out there from pattern master, kicks, bobs, hevi shot, muller, briley you name it. Sold them all to buddies. They are good if you need a tight long distance shot like sky busting. I settled in with 2 chokes from Brileys. Modified and improved modified. Both hold great patterns out to around 30 to 35 yds.

Shooting an 870 and Kent #4 Fasteel, I was crushing ducks at long range with Redhead BlackOut Waterfowl Choke Tube - Mid-Range. Couldn't hit shite with it the first couple of hunts I used it, but I was mowing em down Saturday. Made several 50+ yard follow-up shots.

most people use either modified or improved depending on the gun and the load

What is the difference. I thought they were basically the same.

Modified is a tighter restriction than improved cylinder.

Modified is tighter than improved.

Improved (mainly Improved Cylinder) is zero restriction

No, cylinder is zero restriction. Skeet is slightly tighter, then Improved.
