I've never bow hunted before. I'm gonna start next season, I have a stand that's chained to a tree with a ladder on it. No seat and enough room to stand and move around a little bit. So, I'm gonna need a harness. I've never used a harness and would really prefer to not die doing one of my most favorite things. Any suggestions?

I use a rock climbing harness. Perfect to me, but it is a personal choice.

Ditto on rock climbing harness. Safer and more comfortable IMO.

Depends on wether you want one with pockets or not. I wear a muddy because of how thin it is, I know other people that wear hunter safety that like the vests with pockets

I have a hunter safety and then got a free muddy with a climber I bought. Love the Muddy. The Hunter safety's are too hot/heavy in the early season.

Hit up a local outfitter and see what's up. Black Diamond makes a pretty basic and reliable harness. Mainly for rock climbing but can obviously serve other purposes

I've been bow hunting since 1985 , mostly using a climbing stand. My advice based on your aforementioned statement .... find a larger lock-on stand with a comfortable seat and large platform. There are times when you will have to be in the stand 30 minutes before daylight and hunt till 10:30 ~ 11:00 am. Standing up for 4+ hours is gonna be miserable and dangerous. You will need to sit to be comfortable. Also, when standing you create more movement thus increasing your chances of being spotted / busted by deer and other animals.

Besides your bow, most people bring a back pack up in the stand with a flashlight, water bottle, snacks, calls, binoculars, range finder, knife, shooting release, cell phone, Thermocell, etc ... I sometimes hang my bow using a screw-in tree step so it's at arms reach, other times it's on my lap or in a bow holder mounted to the platform.

If your stand has a seat, you can put items under the seat , out of the way. One other thing to remember, you have to practice shooting from the tree stand. Shooting 25 yards in the back yard from level ground, does not equal shooting the same 25 yard distance from 20 feet up in a tree. You have to slightly bend at the waist and take the shooting angle into consideration. Some range finders have that feature to adjust for target angle and distance.

Since hunting season is over, you should be able to find a good deal on marked down stands and equipment. Not all stands are created equal as some are more comfortable and safer than others. Welcome to the sport and practice, practice, practice. It's definitely addictive especially after you hear that first Thwaaack

edit: HSS, Muddy, Gorilla, and Tree Spider all make great harnesses. Try them on to see which one feels best to you

This type of stand is much easier to bow hunt from

I've enjoyed my summit. Easy to get on and off and had a pocket in the back to hold my tree strap so I don't lose it. The Prussic hitch is nice too.
