I'm a 1911 guy but I'm looking for a 9mm. What's thebest 9's? Where does Springfield xdm rank with em?

How does the xdm fare as a .40 or .45?

HK VP9 or Walther PPQ followed by the XDM, Glock, and M&P.
If you prefer an all metal frame like your 1911, I'd suggest the Beretta 92 as mentioned by the previous poster or a Springfield 1911 in 9mm.

Never been a fan of 1911's that aren't .45, personally.

CZ75 series if you like metal framed hammer fire guns (like a 1911).

If you want the same type of action, a DA/SA HK P30 or P2000 are tough to beat. Check out their LEM action as well, it's hammer fired but acts mostly like a striker fired pistol.

ETA: I thought you best as in money no object, I want a $1000 9mm.

For the money?

FNH, Glock, Ruger, S&W are all good , go to a gun range and rent till you find the one you must have.

Probably the most general question on the planet.

What are you using it for? Do you plan on carrying it?

Full sized offerings from Smith and Wesson, FNH, Glock, Springfield, Ruger, Walther, HK, CZ, Sig, and Beretta are all good choices. The rest will come down to personal preference.

If you also shorten the scope of what question you're asking (like saying "best full sized, polymer framed, striker-fired 9mm") you'll be closer to an answer.

Best for what? The XDM is a great pistol, but I wouldn't want to conceal it. The XDS is my carry pistol. Glock 17 or 19 are options as well. I own all four, and like all four.

H&K P7 is the best 9mm pistol ever made. All others are a distant second.

I've become completely obsessed with shooting my FNX .45 so I'm thinking about getting an FNX 9 for the nightstand and moving the Ruger SR9c to the wife's side of the bed.

Just for the record for those who may not know, production of the P7 was discontinued in 2008. As good as the P7 may be, if the OP is looking for a 9mm that's still in production, he'll need to look elsewhere.

Have you ever shot any? There are a few 1911 based 9mm out there that are fine handguns. STI, Caspian and Kimber all make 1911 (and 2011) 9mms.

I think their best carry pistol (currently made) is the P2000, mostly because it's smaller and smoother than the P30. This video shows the LEM hammer in all of its glory. It's pretty much the perfect sized pistol IMO (looks to be damn near identical in size to the p320 posted above).

This is gonna be a very subjective topic. My favorite 9mm handguns currently are the PPQ and M9A3. In comparison I have owned then sold Glocks and Springfields in the past. All of that being said I think the best value to be had currently are NIB fullsize S&W M&P 9mm's going for just under $400 online.
