I ran around 500 rounds of some RM 9mm 115 gr ammo through my Canik this weekend and would randomly experience some stove pipping issues. This is the first time I've experienced that with this pistol...and that's including the 500+ rounds of Independence aluminum ammo that has cycled through it.

The only other ammo I've run through the pistol is just the basic Remington UMC 115gr.

So I was curious as to what the preferred ammo/brand of 9mm was for those with experience. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I bet if you bumped up to 124gr you'll get a lot less stove piping. I'd be willing to bet money on it.

Federal, Winchester and CCI are my go to handgun ammunition. I would have no problems with Hornady or stuff from Buffalo Bore.

I would shoot Remington only in times of scarcity.

(ETA: And I'm pretty much exclusively 124 and newer 147 grain loadings in 9mm.)

Cleanest ammo I have seen is HPR. I have shot a ton of Winchester White Box and Remington UMC in my lifetime without many issues.

Honestly for target ammunition I'll shoot pretty much anything out of my handguns. The only issues I usually have are some occasional light strikes with crappy steel-cased ammo, which is pretty common.

Your gun should be able to shoot any factory ball ammo reliably. Most modern handguns are designed to require very little maintenance and cleaning to function properly. While it's important to keep your defensive handguns clean and lubed, it's not as essential as most think it is.

(EDIT: A caveat to this I didn't mention would be underpowered target ammo. If it is unable to propel the slide back with enough velocity, that would be a fault of the ammo.)

I would contact Canik if it continues to malfunction with that specific ammunition. If your gun is picky about target ammo, who's to say it won't be picky about hollow point ammo? Confidence in your defensive handgun is very important.

I was thinking the same.

Thanks for the feedback all

Just to make sure I'm not talking about that older subsonic, SMG ammo they foisted on an unsuspecting public 20 or so years ago. Mainly, I'm talking about the new HST and competing loadings.

Agreed. It was strange because the pistol has been nothing but aces for me. I'm going to clean it good and head out with a few different options this weekend and see what happens.

I'm really thinking this may be the issue...

I am also. I had the same issue with a SIG P226 and that's not a cheap pistol. I bumped up to 124gr and shot the crap out of it and now I can run 115 grain all day long. Break it in good with the higher grain and you'll be fine.
