Beginner Recreational Kayak

I've been really interested in getting a recreational kayak and getting out on White Rock Lake (I'm in DFW) and other local lakes/streams.
I'm not interested in fishing out of a kayak, so purely just recreational. I've been reading and most suggest a sit on top kayak. I gotta say I was hoping for a sit in b/c they seem to offer more storage space and the ability to go out and not end up with a wet butt.
They say the sit on tops are easier for beginners though. I was thinking I could compromise with a sit in that has a big opening cockpit.
Anyway, I want to keep it under $500 and the lower the better. I don't know how often I'll go out or if this is just one of those things I'll spend money on and forget about in a few months. So I'm not looking to spend a ton. If it's something I love, I can always upgrade.
So I've got Academy, Dick's, REI, Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mtn(if they're still open) all by me. Any particular brand? I see Pelicans for cheap that look ok for my purpose. Also like Perception kayaks under $500.

For what your needs are just go with a pelican. If you don't like it, easy to sell to another beginner. Easy to paddle, doesn't track good, will get wet,but easy to carry

It's slightly above your budget, but the Perception Conduit 13 sounds right for you.
