I have a mercury outboard and i have new plugs, new wires, new glass gas filter, brand new gas line, removed my oil injection and mix my oil now, changed a starter wire that was melted down, had carbs cleaned and one of the them needed a kit, fixed throttle pin that was popping out, replaced a hose where I pump gas into gas tank and all these improvements have been done since July of this year....here is my issue....when I run my boat after a while boating ,the motor starts to pull back like when my tank gets to be around a 1/3 of a tank left .....like the motor isn't getting gas...it will run fine and then start this process....like the motor is smothering....any opinions...im road blocked on what to do and dont know what it is...thanks in advance....

Did you empty the gas tank and check for water?

ETA: Also check in the tank to see if the gas intake hose isn't loose from the bottom of the tank or something. Idk how your tank is configured tho but it's worth a shot.

Also double check that your gas filter is the right one. If you use one intended for another motor you may not get enough flow.

I had same issue. turned out to be a fuel pump.

I thought it was a dirty tank and the pickup was clogged.

Mechanic gave me that filter so I can see the flow moving thru it making sure gas was getting to carbs...so I assumed it's a proper one

May be fuel pump cause it has never been changed....but it would run fine for a while(all morning) then pull back around noon...if it was fuel pump then it would pulled back from beginning right?

I have a tank under center console....with an hard plastic intake line(tube) thats run to bottom of the tank with a screen on bottom I guess to filter out trash

You would think so, but in my case, it would pull back sporadically, which is why I thought it was a clog working on and off.

Does the problem go away when you fill the tank again? If not, then it is only something that happens after you have been running awhile and is not related to the level of the tank.

If filling up while its doing this resolves the problem, then check out tank and/or replace fuel pump.

How old is the outboard? What horsepower?

Year, model and horsepower? If the issue happens every time when you get to 1/3 of a tank, then you need to look at your fuel pick-up.
