Me and a buddy went make a duck hunt, and on the way back to the truck we saw something sitting on roof.

There was serious consideration on how to shoot it without hitting the truck and also not mess up the bird. The bird had no problem with my buddy walking up to it and getting within feet of it. The bird would just walk across the roof of the truck when he got too close.

My other hunting buddies don't believe it's a pet, but I can't find a single instance of people banding and/or harvesting banded pigeons. All indications point to either a racing or carrier pigeon..?

All I could think about is, I could mount it.

It's someone's pigeon, be it messenger or just flock pet.
shite don't shoot it. There usually is a phone number or contact info on the band.
I found a white dove some time ago that had a band and the bird was from a guy who did weddings. This bird was lucky I found it before the coyotes did.

See if you can contact the owner.

It wasn't killed. It flew off after some time. After some thought, it was decided that killing something that will walk up to you isn't right.

I have 2 White Wing Doves that have frequented my backyard in Houston for two straight summers now. I've contemplated taking them for the bands but it just doesn't feel right. Besides that, my wife would probably skin me alive if she saw me break out the Benjamin.

It is a racing pigeon, they bring them really far from home and drop them and let them race home

We had one show up at work a couple of months back. One of the prettiest birds I have ever seen. It was banded, would perch up on your finger, and coo. It did have a phone number on it so we called it to let them know we had found his bird.

Guy told us he was his best racing pigeon and had made it 250+mi in 2 days. Begged us not to feed him or give him water bc it would break the rules of the race and disqualify him. We obliged him and let him do his thing.

I wanted to keep him if no one answered. Never knew anything about it until then. Amazing looking bird with coloring that was unreal!!! Kinda want to get my own setup when my daughter gets a little older.
From what he told us, and what I've read is it is very honor based type of thing. More or less take a bird a predetermined distance from home and let it do its thing.
The bird that showed up was worth a few thousand outright, but worth more in breeding.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound like you would kill it.
Those birds are so goofy that they get tired and hang out for a while and then split. Hopefully it makes it home!

All good. Bands are so prized on game birds that when my hunting partner saw it, the first thought was to get him. It's also the location of where we found him. Middle of the woods about 2 miles from false river.

Sidenote: I wouldn't race my pigeons during hunting season. Many hunters would have popped that bird.

Came in too late for a dove hunt in Locust Grove Georgia about forty years ago. Farmer didn't have any spots left so my friend and I just hung out with him. So here came a flock of pigeons - farmer told us to get guns and help with pest control. They came back and we got a few, then a few more next pass. Something didn't seem right and after asking the farmer said they were his neighbors. My pal and I left without additional consequence. We never went back.
God only knows how much those birds were worth

When my son was young we finished duck hunting and was at our truck. Some pigeons flew over and he asked to shoot. Come to find out he shot a banded one. Tracked it down it was a racing pigeon from OK City.

My nephew walked up and caught this one while working 60 miles offshore last summer. Must have been worn out from flight.

Pigeon racing is more popular than most people realize. There is a pretty good sized group in NO that races.
