Cousin shot a banded red-head yesterday morning, the band had no numbers on it at all, smooth all around. Anyone ever ran across this?

Not uncommon in divers in sandy bottom feeding area. It's an old bird for sure. Sometimes the W&F can test them and pull numbers off. Talk with Larry Reynolds

Tracking, data and such. Maybe life expectancy around here.

I know a guy that killed a pintail the other day that was banded in 2001. The numbers were legible but barely.

Killed 2 banded woodies this year! Being a big duck hunter I compare it to killing a trophy buck. Its not super rare just like big bucks arent, but the satisfaction you get after all the time you put in makes it a great prize

Bands are a big deal for me because ive been duck hunting for 12 years and have only got 2 bands so its rare for us to get some bands

so it just means someone caught it and put a band on it? it just makes the bird a little more unique?

The bird banding lab can chemically etch the worn band and usually get the number and info. They will then return the band to you. I urge you to contact them.

Correct. WLF and other conservation groups catch them and band them. When you kill one with a band you call it in and they tell you where it was banded and when. Helps them track the birds.

For hunters, it's just the uniqueness that makes them special. You don't weigh ducks and they don't have antlers to measure, so bands are the metric by which a special duck is determined.

I killed a banded woodie back in high school that you could barely read. It was banded 7 years prior about 2 miles from where I killed it.

Bands are funny, at the same time they can be a sign of how much you get to hunt or how lucky you are.
