I don't know where to get one, but my advice is don't.

My wife, then GF, picked one of these little bastards up at the beach after I told her not to.

Disgusting arse animals, they will make the cage green in 48 hours without a filter. They will kill a filter in 5 days, a 3 pack is $15. The filter itself is expensive as hell too. Even with the filter you have to dump the whole tank, change out the water and wash it once a week.

They grow fast enough to piss you off. I constantly had to buy or build something for it's dumb arse to get on to sit in the heat lamp. Which is more cost.

WORST. PET. EVER. I waited till she went to work and threw it in the pond.

You can catch them at LSU lakes. Do a Google search for Care of Red Eared Sliders. You are looking at at least $100 for what they need to survive. Cool pet though if you set it up right.

If you do, be very strict about washing your kids hands immediately after handling, they can give your child salmonella

A childhood friend of mine used to keep a load of them. he would drill a small hole in the rear left portion of the shell and tied a string to it then let it swim in Bayou Robert for a bit before crushing the turtle's dream of freedom.

Just look how excited he is on his $25 plexi glass ramp because his arse makes the floating rocks sink. Oh and he got too damn lazy to chase his food. You would have to hand feed him gold fish.

I use to catch a ton of red ears in LSU Lakes. I used a canoe but there are some decent spots around the bank to find them. Long net is necessary.

I seem to recall reading that catching them in the wild for pets is illegal.

I don't believe so. I know 5 years ago (rules may have changed), it was illegal to catch a local animal and sell, but it was okay to keep turtles as pets as long as you weren't selling it.

I thought it was illegal to sell baby redears in Louisiana.

A friend of mine, when we were younger, would always bring one home from Florida when he went.

Red ears are getting less common.

Ours was a yellow ear slider or yellow belly slider.

Had 3 in a 55 gallon

It was wayyy over filtered.

Water was clean and they grew to 4 inches in length.

We decided to release in the park. (Oh we occasionally fed them live food to get them ready for release)

They are dirty and do need room to swim.
