took my first tour of the basin a few weeks ago after living in Lafayette for 5 years. granted the water was extremely high, but most of the commercial fishing boats we saw were high-nosed aluminum skiffs. would like to keep an eye out forone. any thoughts from yall on these boats and where one could be picked up, new or used? TIA

They are all over the fb marketplace. Looks like they start at about $1200 for a 16' hull and go up from there.

louisiana sportsman has a ton of them for sale. so does craigslist. shouldnt be too hard to find one with a good motor.

ETA: what are you planning to use this boat for? fishing? just boating? Both?

I agree if you look around you can find a good used Alum Jon boat in the BR or Laf area.

The spillway rocked in the old people days of the 60', 70's, and early 80's. Back then it took over an hour to launch a boat when the spillway was right. A lot of these older guys are getting to the point they are passing on or cannot fish anymore. Now the trailer and boat engines may need some work.

You should be able to pickup a decent alum
Jon boat with trailer and maybe an engine that would not take much to get it up for $3,000 or less.

I seen an older (80's or early 90's) alum Jon boat package with Mercury for sale in a parking lot on Hwy 13 in Crowley for sale for a good price yesterday.

You're right. Sometimes I assume people were around boats enough growing up and as adults to know the basics when it comes to boating. Its mostly common sense, however common sense is getting less and less common.

would like to do some fishing and exploring. i grew up on the lacassine bayou from Intracoastal to Lorraine Bridge, but definitely lack experience around the tugs we saw when i was in the basin. i want something durable mostly and it looked like thats what the locals were using.

ETA this is the style i am talking about, but admittedly have never operated one. let me know your thoughts and experiences homemade?

tell me the concept behind this design, if anyone can. thanks to all love this board

If fiberglass also works for you, look for a Campagna when you're going through the classifieds. Not as deep as those aluminum ones, but close to the same form.

There's a ton of boat builders around that can build you a skiff, laid out however you like

I've never been in a skiff like that. but we've always make jokes about them in simesport when we see em on the river. but ill say this, if those river rats in simesport use those to go shad dipping, then they must be some good boats. i just hate the way they look

If you're not crawfishing or dipping shad, I'm not sure why you'd go skiff. If you go flat bottom, you can do what you want (cruise the basin) and fish easier.

A skiff is a nice alternative to mud hulls since they typically have a flat bottom and can be had used cheaper. Also nice having the pointed bow for timber but if you'll have an outboard, I don't see a skiff going to places you can't with a flat bottom and an outboard.

You can def find one in the pierre part/verret area. Check this one out that was on the bayou when we were down there for Memorial Day weekend. I heard bass coming from somewhere and couldn't figure it out until they passed by and I could see. This dude had a big arse speaker box in the front of his boat and what appeared to be a 115 or bigger tiller handle Merc on the back. I didn't even know they made tiller handle motors that big.

I've caught more fish out of rigs like this than I have from any expensive bass/bay boat.
