I have an SKS but thinking about building an AR that is 7.62 because I have so much ammo. What are the cons and pros?

Brag more a-hole.

Are they worth it? Depends on you. I've thought about building an AR10 but difficult to justify another semi-auto .308 while having a M1A I don't shoot as much as I'd like to. They are more flexible and offer more value than M1As though.

7.62 x 51 or 308, yes. 7.62 x 39, not so much.

Just get an AK or Mini 30 to burn off 7.62x39.

Need a good magazine and good bolt. Should be reliable. If it gets you more trigger time more economically then I would say it's worth it. What's your intended use? Range toy? Working brush gun? Would definitely make for a better brush gun than a 556 AR. But you already have a great brush gun in the SKS. Is it worth it for magazine capacity and ability to fix accouterments to the rifle for a brush gun? My own personal use case with a brush gun would be no as I would use irons only and shoot less then 100 yards. As a working tool I would definitly rather have 7.62x39 when shooting deer and hogs over 223/556. Just ringing steel and punching paper it would take a ton of shooting to really make up a cost difference if you already have a 223/556 AR. Not sure it would be worth it in that regard.

After a few minutes of musing I say yes go for it. Any excuse to get or build a new rifle is a good excuse I say no matter now thin the logic behind the reasoning is.

Economist would call this a sunk cost and it shouldn't influence your decision, especially since a stripped lower receiver is probably only <10% of total build cost. The 7.62x39 round's case taper, hard primers and case diameter all make it a finicky cartridge to try to run through typical AR receiver sets. I would stick with a rifle that was designed to shoot the 7.62x39.

i have two of both (AK/SKS) and i prefer my SKS's.
just personal prefenece. they shoot straighter at least on my shoulder and more comfortable

NVM i see now you are looking at a 7.62x39 AR. dont do that, they all are not as relaible as an AK

Skip building the 7.62x39 upper...instead build a 458 SOCOM or a 6.8spc.

I think the answer on this is still "No". If you want to shoot the ammo, get an AK, an SKS or (maybe) a Mini-30, IMHO. Even the Mini-30 has a reputation of being finicky with steel case and some surplus ammo.

An AR chambered in 7.62x39 would be my 4th choice of the common ones. Wanting to stock that caliber is a great excuse to get an AK, again IMHO.
