I'm in an apartment with the two bedrooms' outlets on a single circuit, which is run to a single 30 A arc fault breaker.

The breaker is tripped. I've unplugged everything in both rooms systematically and nothing stops the tripping. Before I go taking off all the outlet covers to check the connections, is there anything else I should check first?

You have a ground or a weak breaker. Be careful.

Are you sure it's a 30? That's not the right size for general use outlets.

Sounds like the breaker itself is bad

And like QT said, 30A is a shite ton for two outlets. You sure that's all that's running off of it?

You're right, it's a 15.

I've heard these kinds of breakers are quite sensitive. Could be a false positive?

It's 2 bedrooms worth of outlets, 8 total on a 15A.

The panel doesn't have a main breaker and I'd rather not work on it hot. I guess I'll just call the complex and have them take care of it.

No shutoff seems safe

Probably has the main in a meter stack somewhere.
OP, for sure if you're renting let them do it.

Yeah, I'm hoping one exists, and that for whatever reason it's just not in the panel.

But then again, if you could see how this place was framed, no main breaker might make sense.

I'm a commercial electrician and every time i put in an arc fault breaker i try to inform the owner about them, they are very sensitive
i would unplug everything in both rooms and see if it trips, things like surge protectors give those breakers fits so just a heads up
if it still trips its most likely is the breaker

as for the Main it could be where the meter is or you could have a older "split bus" panel, i wouldn't recommend you mess with either

They normally have a big group of throw switches for every apartment in every building, but all of the boxes I've looked inside had a main shutoff in the apartment

So do vacuum cleaners. I can have a triple stack of switches for lighting in my master bath. I can hit them all at the same time and trip an arc fault. No over load. Those things suck. I've gotten used to them. If you weren't in someone else's building, I would suggest you just replace the arc fault with a same sized standard breaker. Let your conscience be your guide.

Does it trip when anything is plugged in it just certain items?

I had a warranty call on one because a lamp and computer cable kept tripping it.

Found out the ladies cat chewed on both items and that was the cause of the trip.
