What do you baws think about the scopes that have a reflex on top of it? Example All the reviews are really good, but it seems like it would be really cumbersome.

I think you just have to pick one - a low power, traditional magnified scope (2x7, 3x9, etc.) or reflex/holographic. If you want the best of both worlds get a reflex with a magnifier.

What you don't want to do is go overboard.

Yeah that's exactly why I'm skeptical. I'm not a tactibro and this looks like a lot to worry about. I want somewhere around a 4x.

I just put the Nikon 300BO scope on my AR - nice glass to start with and the BDC is pretty accurate

You can get an aimpoint/eotech with a 3x mag piece and have the best of both worlds as a poster mentioned. Gets expensive though.

I just bought the Nikon P-308 and rings for my S&W M&P10. It has the BDC. Have not shot yet bc the rifle is on backorder until Christmas (Cabela's)

The one you showed on there looks like a piece of crap. Then again, I could be biased since it's not one from a big player manufacturer. I would never put an actual laser on a rifle unless I were on an assault team and we were using IR lasers. A magnified optic will give you plenty of accuracy alone to not need a dumb laser.

This is generally how I set up my ARs:

16": no magnification - red dot; low magnification 1-4x
18": 3-9x magnified optic
20": 4-12x magnified optic

As you lengthen the barrel you add weight to the upper which would mean less mobility and more of a chance of you shooting it from the prone position. Plus the longer your barrel the greater your effective distance.

As for brands, I would get something that is in the same class as your rifle, meaning, I wouldn't put a Nightforce optic on a Bushmaster. If you get a high dollar rifle, get high dollar glass. If your rifle is just an average one, I've been very happy with my Redfield Revolution scope on my 20" AR. Shot 1/2MOA last Friday with it and that gun has seen thousands of rounds. The Redfield has impressed me.

I like my 1-4x24 on my carbine. Though it could honestly be a 1x and 4x because I don't use the magnifications in between. I think I would be perfectly happy with a fixed 4x on my carbine.
