6.8, 6.5 grendel, 204 ruger, 22lr, 458 bushmaster, 50 Beowulf and probably like 20 or so other ones.

What are you looking to do?

Hunting what? 6.8, 6.5, 300 blackout for a small frame ar. You could always step up to the large frame ar and get a 308, 243, 6.5 creedmoor, etc etc

6.5 grendel

This is going to be my next upper. I have a couple 5.56, a 300BO, 9mm and 7.62 so the grendel is next on my list. I think it's a good in between 7.62 and 300 BO.

None of these require any mods to the lower?

No but they would most likely require different magazines, although I don't know that for sure.

Note that pretty much all the rounds listed are expensive. And unless you plan on reloading them yourself, you'll most likely need to order the specific load online that you're looking for.

My suggestion would be to step up to AR10 territory (or large frame as kengel mentioned). You get much more versatility specific to hunting. 308 hits large animals a good bit harder than 223/556.

Go .300 blackout and the only thing you have to change is the ammo. Same mags, bolt everything.

You can shoot a lot of different rounds out of the same lower, however, other issues come into play. What type of hunting? depending on this, like stated above, you might want to switch to ar10, if you are stuck with the ar platform

And if you don't plan on reloading, be ready to do the wallet mod - empty everything inside.

The most popular "non-standard" calibers seem to be 6.8spc and .300 blackout - with Grendel and others gaining ground.

Honestly, if I decide against a "tacticool" .22, getting a .22lr upper would be something I would consider before straying from 5.56mm NATO.

Then, probably a .300 blackout. (ETA: Or maybe a 9mm).

After that, I would probably look at getting an AR-10 lower OR build a long range AR-15 (Mk12 clone).
