AR 15 for beginner

I was at the gun show at Lamar Dixon yesterday and I spoke to several dealers. Most of them said it does not really matter that much on what brand of AR I want to buy. I think I will take it to the range maybe 6 times per year.
One of the dealers told me I could buy a kit that had Yankee hill upper and anderson aluminum lower for about $600.
I really don't know much about guns, but I want to buy an Ar any advise would be helpful.

Smith and Wesson sport AR. Dirt cheap and fun.
Or Larue. Your choice.

Go to palmetto state armory and watch for deals on a complete upper and lower.

You can find Smith and Wessons for under six hundred. Built and ready to go.

they had some palmetto state AR for $500 can't remember if it was both upper and lower.
Do you guys agree that it does not really matter what brand. I was trying to get something a little nicer than the Smith and Wesson.

S&W is a great deal. Palmetto is good too.

Spend a little more and get a Spikes Tactical. Well worth the little extra money

On what grounds? What S&W or Palmetto AR has failed where a Spikes hasn't?
Do you think the barrels are better? Uppers? Lowers?
He clearly stated that this was a range gun not some super tier7 operational operator that only Spikes offers.

For the type of use the OP is planning on using this gun for, I'd recommend either the S&W M&P 15 Sport or the Ruger AR556. Both models can usually be found on sale from online retailers for under his $600 threshold with the S&W usually a good bit less than that.
Both are exceptional "starter" AR's and will serve him well.
The palmettostatearmory.com route is also a good one but for a noob could be quite overwhelming. I get 1-2 emails a day from them with all their daily, weekly and weekend specials and yes, a "mix & match" upper and lower can usually be put together for about his price range but their complete rifles are usually a little above his threshold. Also, unless the OP is well versed in AR's it can get quite overwhelming quickly trying to find the right upper and lower and making sure both of them come as complete assemblies and that they're exactly what he wants - i.e. 5.56, .223, .223 Wylde, chrome barrel, mid length barrel, all the different handguards and other furniture, etc, etc, etc...
I'd just stick with an S&W or Ruger.

Zero wrong with the S&W. You'll be very happy with it.

Check Slick Deals too for sales. They had a link last week for the S&W M&P Sport 15 for $500.

Got a Colt le6920 from academy for 999 on recommendations from the OB. I'm happy as a possum eaten pumpkin seeds

SW, Ruger, they are all good guns. Once you buy one, especially a gas gun, take it to someone who has been through ARMY basic training and learn how to clean it and lube it, that has more to do with reliability than other things

Contrary to what the Army taught us, you don't have to have it "white glove" clean. A little carbon is okay.
Yankee Hill is good. Learn with pop up/down iron sights. After you've zeroed your sights in at 25 meters go with a scope. Start with an Aim Point first then work up to a zoomed in scoop.
Guns are a lot of fun. You'll be out at the range more than 6 x's a year once you get into shooting.
BPT spend a shite ton of $

Another one they teach the military guys is that if you push the bolt into the BCG and then give the BCG a light 'flicka da wrist', the bolt should come forward. This isn't necessarily true. And if the bolt moves in the carrier very freely it could mean it's time to change your gas rings or if it's new, the gas rings could be bad. A bolt should be tight in the carrier. You should be able to stand it up right on the bolt face and it hold the weight of the carrier without sliding down any. I always see people picking up BCGs and flicking them and if it's tight they think it's a bad thing. They're actually looking for them to be really loose.

Fair enough.

If you're just putting the 2 halves together, I would buy a Ruger AR556 or Smith M&P Sport II instead.
If you want to assemble a complete lower for the experience, I think Brownell's (and other places) have a bunch of videos to walk you through it. PSA, BCM, Brownells, and a bunch of other places are great sources of parts, tools, information, as well as AR15.com for a user forum.

Well, it does and it doesn't. There are a bunch of cheap parts out there. The lower is the least important part, though (and the only thing regulated as a firearm). If you build, remain cognizant of all NFA regulations (mainly to avoid unintentionally becoming a felon by assembling an unauthorized short barreled rifle).
But, again, if you just want a rifle to start making holes in targets, Ruger AR556 or M&P Sport II are the best choices - you can get them for under $700 at Academy (and other big box sporting goods chains), but I strongly encourage you to call your local gun stores and give them an opportunity get your business.
Good luck and safe shooting.
