Good friend of mine started the trail today. I could've probably done the trail in my late teens or early twenties but not now. Hope he reaches Maine!! If not, at least he gets to live a dream of his and scratch one off the bucket list.

Nope and never will get the chance unless I hit the lottery.
I'd like to be a section hiker of the PCT.

Why not? Unless you are missing a leg I don't see why you'd underestimate yourself.
I met a couple in their 60's on the PCT in Central Oregon. It cam be done if you have the will.

Hiked all along the TN portion, but haven't hit the trail outside of the state. I believe we've got the highest elevation along the trail which makes for some beautiful scenery.
Good luck to him. IT'll be an incredible adventure

I'm with you on the lottery! My friend is very lucky that he has such an understanding employer!! I would at least like to try a section of it.

I am thinking I'll start using a week of vacation a year to start knocking out portions of the trail. I'll start with Oregon and work North. Plus using days off to knock out 40-50 miles.

It get's up to 6600 ft along some portions. Close to Clingmans dome look out tower. They're a lot more than hills in some spots, but nothing like out west.
ETA: The trail is close to 300 miles in East TN

I read that most hikers on the AT are college aged, recently divorced, or retired. All of us in between have too much trouble taking off work for 5-6 months.
I may start making plans to hike the GSMNP portion of it in the next few years. That should only take a few weeks.
Also, take a look at the Ozark Highland Trail in Arkansas.

Beautiful terrain and wildlife along the way. Hard to beat the views of East TN/West NC/ SW VA areas once you cross the Mississippi.

Hope he has good insulation for this early of a start. Plus with all the ice that area got it could be interesting.
I've hiked some of it on the Franconia Ridge in New Hampshire. They don't believe in switchbacks there. Some of it is scrambling up and under rocks.

My neighbor did it. He was laid off, wasn't married, no kids, and decided to give it a go.
He finished the trail, and his previous employer ended up hiring him back.

Very true. And you better have a good walking stick with you. You will definitely encounter lots of timber rattlers and copperheads.
