Anyone here made their own crawfish paddle out of wood?

If so, which wood did you use? I never carved anything really but I figure just drawing out a template, cutting it out and a bit of sanding is all I really need to do. Thoughts?

I've got some old cypress laying around. Just wasn't sure if a hardwood would hold up better to brief bouts of stirring boiling water. Maybe maple?

How have yours held up to boils? Been having them a good while?

Cypress would be good enough. Soft enough for easy woodwork, and pretty water resilient.

I'll probably try it out on some cheap pine i have laying around and then try with cypress. I'll post pics in the woodworking thread later

I would just watch out for anything that might have been treated in any way, but for an old wood crawfish paddle pretty much anything that won't curl in the boiling water or vomit sap everywhere should be ok.

Whatever you use, seal it in cutting board oil. I know, the heat will kill germs, it's cheap.

I made one out of an oak floorboard, because I had one lying around. I had no diagrams or plan; just a piece of wood, a router, and a little time on my hands. The shaft turned out krooked as hell, but it reminds me of my old house every time I stir the pot.

My local Walmart had their stainless steel crawfish paddles on clearance for $7. Seems to be well made.

I understand this is a wooden paddle thread but I have one of these for crawfish and I love it.

I made one from about a 10 foot tall cypress tree that we had to remove when we put in a pool.

I hated to see the tree go, so decided to make something from it. The size of the trunk was about perfect width of the paddle. I used a wood burner to add some personal touches.

Im no professional wood carver, but it came out nice enough
