My dad and I built a 8' for me when I was a kid to hunt the bayous and bar pits around home. He figured it would be light enough for me to handle but sturdier than a pirogue as I would hunt alone a lot. It was a bad arse little beast except it was kind of hard to paddle being so short. But I put a 28lb thrust trolling motor on it and it was the bees knees.
Pretty simple design. Thick (1 1/2")cypress for the bow and stern. 3/8 luan plywood for the bottom and sides. Treated 1x4 pine for the frame. Treated whole thing with linseed oil and caulked the joints then roughed it an painted it olive drab.
At one point I even made a blind for it out of chicken wire and pvc. Worked great in the flooded fields that had some stubble left in them.

Haven't built my own yet but plan to at some point this year. I have the plans for the tango skiff. I will build mine out of aluminum as i have better metal working than carpentry. Not to mention i don't want to mess with fiberglass. A boat like the one you linked should be pretty straight forward build wise and fairly cheap too. I design work boats for a living and haven't designed/built one for myself yet

Looks like at least $500 to $600 for materials. If you really really really want to build a wooden boat, the project is for you, as a project. For the cost you are about equal to the cost of a riveted jon, something we discussed the other day.
But if you want to impress your kids, build the wooden boat. It will be exciting when you put it in the water for the first time.
(When I was young my father built a television. Soldered every circuit board from plans he bought. Damn thing worked.)

I am interested in the design/look of the boat but would rather build out of cypress, specifically reclaimed cypress if possible.
Is it necessary to use newer wood to shape or is old stuff usable?

My computer skills are zilch!
The link opens right up for me in Firefox if that makes any difference.
The boat is a 16', flat bottom Center Console plywood skiff, clear shellac in & out, with Cypress Gunnels and 3- 2 1/2 " Cypress runners on the bottom.
Quite a popular boat down here.

Google "Brockway Skiff"
The link with something about sound school has an excellent tutorial on how to build them.
Gueydan Lumber has 1/4" Marine Plywood for $52. Not sure about anything larger.

fishfighter's pirogue build for the EJW Benefit
Also, shouldn't that thread be saved with the benefit threads so it doesn't get deleted?

I built this 8ft boat in high school. made for a 5.5 but was too slop so I cut up my brothers stand-up jet ski and put the jet drive and motor in it. not really for fishing but it was still fun
