Anyone have problems with SBEII misfiring?

I took off work Monday to turkey hunt. I called up a nice tom around 8:30, pulled the trigger and all I got was a click. He just stepped off out of the logging road into the woods so I ejected and loaded a second shell. About a minute later a second bigger tom steps out following the first one presenting an even closer shot. Pull the trigger and get another click.
I bought this gun last February before turkey season. I shot it twice to pattern it and I shot it one more time killing a turkey. I used it one time in December on a great duck hunt in which I shot 3-4 boxes of shells over 2 days. I did have it click on me twice during the duck hunt. I also did hunt Saturday in the rain and mud and didn't clean it before Monday.
I talked to my uncle this morning, and he said the same thing happened to him with his SBE on 4 gobblers over the years, so he quit using it. He said with his it didn't matter how much he cleaned it, it would still happen to him from time to time. Does anyone know if this is a problem with SBEII or was it a result of not cleaning after hunting in the rain Saturday morning? I don't feel like it got dirty enough Saturday to really cause problems, at least with my last shotgun I don't think it would have.

Was the primer punched on the shells? Bad batch maybe?

At this point I would start murdering people.

Could be a few things.
1) The dreaded 'Benelli click.' Some say this is a Benelli design flaw, I say it's more user error. Basically, the shooter accidentally knocks the bolt out of battery. Then the firing pin can't hit the primer and all you hear is a click. The test for this is to make sure the little shell rim holder on the bolt end is all the way 'up' when the bolt is closed.
2) A cleaning issue. Basically, there is too much crud on the bolt rails, or in the recoil spring in the stock, that is keeping the bolt from fully closing.
3) Bad firing pin. You should be able to take the bolt out, remove the firing pin, and inspect it for pitting, chipping, etc.
4) Bad shells. As another user noted, look at the shell that didn't fire. Is there a primer strike?
Those are usually the big ones. Only the first one is really Benelli specific.

No. When I walked out and got back to the truck. I tried firing both shells, first shell clicked again, second shell fired.
I cleaned the shite out of it Monday afternoon, but now I don't trust the gun anymore. I went to Bass Pro last year with a bunch of gift cards looking to buy a shotgun specifically for turkey hunting only. They had this SBEII on clearance for $1099 plus $100 rebate plus 10% off for putting it on a Bass Pro credit card, so I bought it thinking I could use it the few times I duck hunt each year as well. It didn't come with the hard case or all of the extra chokes just the box an basic chokes. I'm wondering if there was something wrong with this specific gun and that's why it was so cheap

I was surprisingly calm. I didn't get really pissed until I was trying to sleep Monday night. Then yesterday on the way to work it would have been a perfect morning, and I got pissed all over again thinking I blew my day off and now have to wait 4 more days to try again

This. Happens to me every once in a while when shooting out of a layout blind. If you hit your gun on something, the bolt action will come loose off the shell and won't make good contact. Make sure the damn bolt is all the way jammed up in there before you take the shot.
It's bullshite but can be fixed with replacement high performance parts from Benelli. My buddy's SBE2 was giving him a fit in KS.

I think I got 5 years of proper mechanical operation on mine.
It's probably shot 4 cases (1000 rounds) during that time.

Mine sbeI is 19 years old. I'll get a goofup click or hold open maybe three times a season. I got over it. I like the fact that it's 19 years old and still kicking.

But to answer your question. It's almost definitely the beneli click. Test by lightly closing the bolt without letting it rotate and lock and dry fire it and see if that's the sound you heard. Best way to see is you should have looked at the primers to see if they were even hit at all. If no definitely benelli click. Replace recoil spring and should be ready to go.

Yep.
OP likely closed the bolt in a controlled slow manner to be quiet, rather than letting it slam completely shut.

FWIW OP - They 'fixed' the Benelli click in the Ethos and SBE 3 models
I have an Ethos and can confirm, it is damn near impossible for the bolt to not go back into battery.

I definitely did this on the second shell, on the first one I moved around a good bit from 6-8 trying to find some birds and probably did something to knock it out of place
Thanks for the replies

Either way, that should not be happening whatsoever!

I've done it on every semi automatic gun that I own

Then pony up and buy and sbeIII baw.

I get 2 or 3 "clicks" a year with my sbe2 during duck season. Not sure what the problem is. I've just learned to accept it.
