I want to get a fly setup. Did it for the first time for some bream today and fell in love. Learn me about line weights, reel and rod sizes, etc for reds.

Thanks!

I have an 8 weight Orvis Clearwater (medium action) and a matching Battenkill reel that I never use anymore. I bought it about 10 years ago. I used it bass fishing about 3-4 times, and one time redfishing. It has the original line on it. I'll give you a good deal on it if you want it.

Best place to learn is at ORVIS In Baton Rouge.

They have a 101 fly fishing class on April 11 Fly Fishing 101 - April 11th

7-10wt for reds. 8wt is the sweet spot, but go with a 10 if you plan on going after bulls exclusively.

Since most redfishing is done in the shallows, stick with a floating line. Use a large arbor reel that you can put a couple hundred yards of backing onto. This will help if you end up hooking a 30lb red in the marsh on a 7wt!

As for flies, I like poppers for reds. Clouser minnows are good subsurface flies to use, as are spoon flies; especially good for sight casting. But really, reds will eat anything as long as it is in front of them and they're hungry.

Good, cheap beginner setup would be an 8wt 3forks/Cabelas prestige combo from cabelas. They can be had for about $80 with line and backing. A good step up is the Cabelas RLS+ And if you have cash to burn, the sky's the limit when it comes to fly setups!

Orvis is a good place to start with their 101 class

I have a lot of experience fly fishing for reds..

Learn to cast well. Practice casting every chance you get. learn to haul and double haul.

I fish an 8wt fall through spring and a 6wt for most summer fishing. Always weight forward floating line. Spend your money in this order Rod, Line, and then Reel. You won't need a high dollar reel right away. A $700 Tibor does you zero good if you trying to cast weed eater line with a broom handle. Most all redfish can be fought off the reel and in the event you need to put the fish on the reel you can palm the spool for extra drag. Tapered leaders turn over flies better, this is a fact, don't let anyone tell you differently. Start out with good tapered leaders and as you get better you can start messing with your own leaders. Spring and summer duck ponds are productive. I like to throw small kwans, gotchas, charlie variants, I save poppers for special days or for early mornings.

How do you plan on fishing? From a poling skiff? Kayak?

Sight casting refish on the fly is something every inshore fisherman should try. It's a shame it's not more popular. We have what is probably the greatest redfishery in the world for fly fishing.

Wow thanks for the info. Was looking at this setup LINK

I will be fishing exclusively from a kayak and not targeting bulls specifically.

I don't know anything about the encounter combo. Orvis is gear so it's hard to go wrong. Keep an eye on some the fly fishing forums, lots of good deals out there.

I just made the switch over to the Orvis Ignition fly line. It's got a short front taper making it load quickly. Awesome line for quick shots inside of 50-60 feet.

I fish from a paddle board from time to time. Kayaks and SUP's are awesome for sight casting. Learn to stand up in your kayak, height is everything. If you're going to fly fish for reds from a kayak I recommend getting rid of all unnecessary crap out of your kayak and don't be afraid to leave the spin gear at the house. I liked to use a push pole or stand up paddle board paddle when I fished out of a kayak. I put a little foam tape on the gunwales so when I sat my paddle down to take a shot at a fish I didn't make any noise.

Good to hear, I'm debating between the bonefish HD or ignition.

Lots of good advice in this thread. Spend money on the rod.
Orvis Clearwater is a good starting point. Alex - the manager at Orvis in BR- will treat you right.
I'd also suggest TFO (temple fork outfitters) - their professional series rods appears to be a very good rod for the money. I have the mangrove and really love it. The Geen Trout in BR has a good selection.

As mentioned, the 8 wt is a great all around size to start.
Practice casting, in salt - accuracy in the 25-50 range is everything.

As far as redfish go...throw a clouser in their face and strip/pull it away from them...tease them. Try to keep it away from them and they will slam it.

The Ignitor is awesome. You will like it. Fast action rods like to slam flies down like hammer when casting in close. The short front taper makes presentation much more delicate without having to carry a lot of line.

Out of cypremort point its almost impossible. Water always looks like choc milk.

We catch decent on skrimps, but i would love to do the fly deal. I have fished in lafitte in that pretty water and had a blast.

How much wind is too much wind for fly fishing reds? Everytime Ive been out, it gets 12-15mph actual minimum wind speed. As a lake and stream fly fiaherman, I dont see how people fly fish inshore. Does fly fishing insore only last the first 2 hours after sunrise?

Casting in the wind is no big deal, it's poling into the wind that ruins the day. As long as I can see the fish the wind isn't too big of a deal.

I'll take 20 mph winds and clear skies over cloudy skies and no wind.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. I think I'm going to give it a try in the near future.
Have you tried the bonefish?

Truth.

I'm in the process of trying to get back into trout fishing in rivers. shite is frustrating compared to saltwater.

Every single time you've been redfishing, it's gotten up to 12-15? I've been plenty of calm days.

Go see Ron in the Fly Fishing Department at Bass Pro in Denham Springs. He'll fix you up.
