Anyone ever shot a flare from a shotgun?

I was just noticing the other day that flares made for boaters are basically 12 gauge shotgun shells. It seems to me that it would be a good idea to have a few of these in my blind bag when hunting in the marsh just in case of emergency...
has anyone here ever actually shot one of these flares from a shotgun?....

Other than possibly setting the marsh on fire, I'm not sure if it would be very good for the inside of your barrel. Flares aren't meant to be fired out of a 28inch barrel and could get stuck inside of it after you fire it.
Flares in the marsh don't seem like a good idea, but if you felt the need to have them I think you'd be best off just having a cheap flare gun.

I actually hadn't thought of setting the marsh on fire (which is a very real possibility)...but I wouldn't shoot one except in life threatening situations...

I've shot them before, but out of an old 870. Was scared to put one through my benelli. It looks just like a roman candle.

On a related note, is there anything to keep an idiot from putting a 12 gauge shell in one of those orange plastic flare pistols?

I think the flares are like 2" so a 2-3/4" wouldn't fit.. I could be wrong though
