If our public land elk hunt plans don't go through for this year, I definitely plan on making an out of state hunt next season. Entirely too hard to try to find a club/lease to join around here even with willing to spend good money.

On that note I have contacted a few outfitters and gotten prices, but was toying with the idea of just leasing anywhere from 50-300 acres from someone for the same price as an outfit. Obviously you are losing the guide services, but you could double your hunting time. I just feel like these farmers/land owners could be leasing the property to someone else while you're not there, as well as locals would probably be crawling all over it.

Anyone have any success or horror stories they could share? Possible leads as well?

My boss and his boss both lease land out of state. My boss leases land in Kansas. Another guy we work with is from there and his family owns a farm. Leased 300 acres from them.

My bosses boss leases land in Missouri. He found his leases (he leased three farms) on Basecamp.com. Him and his two sons ended up acquiring around 650 acres of farmland in N. Missouri.

Neither tell the landowners when they're coming or going but do keep in touch with the landowners upon arriving at the properties and inform them of anything they find or see. So far has worked out great for them

We never leased, but did a do it yourself, private land trespass fee for several years. The landowner did have a couple of muzzleload hunters at others times. We usually hunted around the first of November and stayed as long as we wanted. After the first couple of days, you have the stands figured out.
Outfitters are like restaurants, they make money by rotating tables or hunters.
We were in Kansas and the people were great. I would recommend craigslist in areas you are interested. Also, you may want to call co-ops up there and see what leads they have. You might do well to go up for a public land spring turkey hunt, and use midday to find a deer lease. Just go talk to people at businesses, etc.

There are land owners that lease by the week in some places. It's amazing all the different hunting possibilities.

Me and one coworker lease a 265 acre farm in Wisconsin. Have have it about 5 years with no problems at all. We have a great relationship with the farmer which is key. We take care of his land and always give them a gift. Never have had any trespassing issues. We got it through a buddy who sold the farm. He has connections for other leases if Wisconsin is in your plans.

Wisconsin a heck of a drive! I checked out the southeast corner of Oklahoma cause Kansas is a heck of a ride. Basically limits yourself to huniting on vacation from work only. Worse part of that for me is leaving my daughter for a week at a time unless she's out of school.

My coworker and 3 of his buddies lease some land in Kansas. They get one tag a piece and the rifle season is only like 10 days long I believe is what he said. They all kill a giant buck every year, but he said it's a crapshoot because you don't want to fill that tag early in the week and then have to watch a bigger deer walk later. He killed a big one on the first day a few years ago and just sat in the blind and got hammered the rest of the week

eta: they all live in Mississippi and fly out, just stay in a hotel nearby

I'd be bow hunting only so if I filled my tag I'd head back to the house and call it a good year!

They drive back or pay to ship the deer meat? If I can't find something really good around here and I don't spend 2 weeks in Colorado I'm really thinking about going this route next season.

Did they use the inteenet to find theirs? Hard to think about leasing something from just some aerial shots.
