I have. If you don't mind being a little chilly it's really nice. Just remember though, building fires is prohibited. We didn't know that when we went - hey it was the early 90's and before Al gore invented the internet. Without a fire it got cold at night.

Beautiful park though!

Big Bend is wonderful. You basically have every kind of terrain and environment from high altitude forest to river valley to grassland prairie to desert. Amazing place but be prepared if you opt for outback camping.

i don't mean to hijack your thread, but i don't want to start another one about camping..

my group of friends and myself have been talking about going camping during the winter and i really have no clue where to start looking.. we were hoping to be in a secluded area where we could sleep in tents and possibly do some fishing.. we don't want to be in a cabin and would like to be surrounded by woods... if anyone can help me or suggest different places i can go look, let me know

ETA: we are in the new orleans area and would probably go as far as 2 or 3 hours away

thanks in advance

Primitive camping areas at Chicot State park, and Indian Creek Rec area. You can hike or boat in to the Chicot spots, and drive in to the Indian Creek spots.

Only the May; love the place. In the winter you may want to camp somewhere along the Rio Grande rather than Chisos Basin. The Basin is a lot prettier but it is also over 5,000 feet of elevation and it's shady. Down along the river it's more like 2,000 feet and much sunnier.

No fire? That's a bummer. How do you keep warm without a fire?

What do you mean by be prepared? Any tips/suggestion would be helpful. It's my first time outback camping and I'll be out there for 10 days.
