Anyone ever bought a boat out of state?

I'm wanting to have a boat built by a company in another state. I'm wondering how you pay taxes on that. I know you pay state taxes to the department of revenue, but how much? And it also said something about local tax to the parish courthouse. How much do you have to pay to the parish? Thanks.

Depends on the parish. State is a flat 4%. You fill out the form (1331 I think), bring it to the courthouse to pay parish taxes, then to the state tax office to pay state (NOLA or BR), then mail all of that plus your bill of sale or COO with a registration application to LDWF.

You may have to pay city taxes too. I did this years ago. It was a pain.

It's a multi step process of paying parish and state taxes, then WLF feea for boat registration, then DMV to register trailer.
Knowing this will take a little time going in will help you be less frustrated, and be sure to keep ALL paperwork no matter how minor you think it is.

What? I've done this three times and never heard of anything about any city taxes. You pay parish taxes based on where you live in your parish, but you don't have to pay a city tax.

You have to pay tax on the total price though right? So you wouldn't have to pay anymore taxes to the DMV when you register the trailer. Right?

Negative. Separate process. You pay taxes based on the total price of the boat itself. The trailer is the only thing done through the DMV.

Not that it matters, but you find it odd we are getting down votes for helping someone out?

So you pay state and parish tax on the boat, not the motor, at the courthouse and the department of revenue. And then you pay tax on the trailer at the DMV?

I'm telling you man...the OB is turning into the OT.

Right, except that you'll have to pay taxes on the motor as well unless you buy the motor in-state. Each time I've done it, I had the boat built elsewhere and bought the motor locally, so I didn't have to add the value of the motor to what I paid taxes on. The motor retailer took care of that for me.

The boat and motor are seen as a package deal typically.
You pay parish tax first then state tax, showing them proff of parish tax payment.
After that is all done, you'll be able to register it with WLF.
Somewhere in this process you'll need a seperate bill of sale for the trailer to bring to DMV to pay those taxes and fees.

When you had your east cape built did you not pay sales tax in Florida? I feel the last Florida boat I had I only paid the remaining 1%. It's been a while since I had a new boat built so please forgive me if I'm getting this wrong. Also did you pay taxes on the full price of the build or only on the hull by itself sans rigging and accessories?

Ok that doesn't seem too bad. Thanks

Nah, no taxes in Florida. Everything was paid here. LA makes it difficult for sure though. They don't like us buying boats out of state.
I paid taxes on the full price of the build except for the motor and trolling motor, because both of those were bought locally. It included all of the rigging and accessories. I got a separate invoice/bill of sale from Ramlin to deal with trailer title and whatnot.

It's really not a big deal man, especially if you're close to NOLA or BR. Just keep all your stuff together like the earlier post mentioned. Get you a folder in the beginning and just add all of the paperwork to it throughout the process. If you lose something important, you have to start all over.

It really isn't bad, I've done it twice, but on used boats. Just need to know going in that it takes a little time and everyone wants some money

Motor and boat usually a package deal. If it has a title your good. Get bill of sale notarized for the amount and have them sign the titles over. Pay LA state and your Parish tax on that amount.
Trailer if it's titled, sign over title, noticed bill of sale, take to dmv and pay taxes and get registered.
Then send papers for boat/motor to wlf for registration.
If either is not registered have fun. That's where it becomes a pain

Can you pay taxes to each by mail or is it faster to take a day and hit parish taxes then drive to BR to do state then hit WLF last?

Why a second BOS? does the DMV keep it even though you need it to pay taxes?

not courthouse, but the school board office for Lafourche parish.
