Ive used north star outfitting the past few years and have a trip booked again with them next fall. The guy who runs it is named neil johnson. Its 3 days, 6 hunts and each hunt is mixed with mostly geese and a handful of ducks. Id say on average our hunts this past year were 40 or so geese and 15-20 ducks. The lodge is located in Marwayne, alberta, but its right near the saskatchawan border. We normally fly into edmonton and its a 3 hour drive from there

I've been. Flew into Saskatoon and then drove SE to Wishart. Hunted around there and between the Quill Lakes. We rented a house from a farmer and hunted his property, in addition to other areas.

We shipped stuff up to him and he kept it in the basement of his rent house.

Didn't use a guide service, just did it all ourselves. We would hunt the morning and then spend the afternoon in the truck driving around looking at potholes and field, then we would ask permission and hunt there the next morning.

Only problem we had was on the farmer's pothole the last morning. We wanted to hunt close to the house since guys had different flight plans. We set up in a big pothole and then some guys drive off the road and start yelling at us about being out there. We gave him the farmer's name, he said OK and left.

On this note, would like to do some freelance hunting in the Midwest. Are farmers generally liberal in letting people hunting their land? I know down here it's a different ball game.

Last year in SD, getting access to ducks was easy if you could find the farmer. They thought you were looking for pheasant land and said no. Then we explained we were looking for ducks and they said, you want to hunt ducks? Happened more than once...

Was talking with TheGreat318 about this last week. That had to be an amazing feeling to easily secure good duck hunting ground.

You could find some farmers out in Kansas that would provide permission. The public areas out there don't get tons of pressure so that is a good backup. We had a fine time hunting public land a couple weeks ago.

I'd think you could drive the countryside and find landowners who would give you permission to hunt ducks/geese on their property.

Now, I'm not posting from experience, but I just don't get the sense that they see it the same way as the landowners in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and SE Missouri.

Not sure about Iowa or early hunting in Minnesota.

We've used Spirit Creek Outfitters a number of times. Dean is an excellent guide and a great host.

Bring yourself an ice chest full of shrimp, you will be able to hunt pretty much where you please.
